Congress president Rahul Gandhi Thursday met a Dalit woman who was allegedly gang-raped in front of her husband in Rajasthan's Alwar district.

Gandhi was accompanied by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, deputy CM Sachin Pilot and Congress national general secretary Avinash Pandey.

It was earlier believed that he was going to reach Alwar around 15 May.

The Alwar gang rape incident took place on 26 April, when the survivor was travelling with her husband on a motorcycle on the Thanagazi-Alwar bypass. This is when the miscreants stopped them and took them to an isolated place off the road.

They allegedly beat the husband and raped her in front of him. One person had also taken a video and threatened to circulate it if the couple decided to approach the police.

Her husband claimed that he had approached Rajasthan police on 26 April after the incident, but an FIR was filed on 2 May. He had alleged that the police did not take action, saying they were busy with elections.

An FIR was lodged on 2 May and the accused circulated a video clip of the crime on 4 May.

Subsequently, five accused, who allegedly raped the woman, and the one who shot and circulated the video clip, have been arrested.

The incident triggered widespread protests in Alwar, Jaipur, Dausa and nearby areas and a protest march led by BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Kirori Lal Meena had turned violent in Dausa on Tuesday, leaving over half a dozen people injured.

This incident has been of prime importance and has been condemned by PM Modi and BSP leader Mayawati.

Speaking to the media about the Alwar Rape case, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said:

“Soon after I had heard about the incident, I spoke to Ashok Gehlot Ji. This is not a political issue for me. I met the victim’s family and they have sought justice which will be done. Action will be taken against culprits.”
