A 21-year-old Tanzanian student has lodged a police complaint accusing a mob of stripping her and forcing her to walk “without her top” on the street in Bengaluru on the night of 31 January, The Indian Express reports.
The incident allegedly took place following an accident that occurred earlier in the day, when a car driven by a Sudanese medical student run over a local resident, 35-year-old Sabeen Taj, who died as a result.
According to the Tanzanian student complaint, a mob gathered at the site and set the Sudanese student’s car on fire, as well as a car in which she was travelling in.
However, the complaint of being stripped by the mob was filed only on Wednesday, 3 February, when the police summoned her following media reports of the alleged incident.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj termed the incident as “shameful” and said that she has asked Karnataka Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah to take “stringent” action against the guilty.

Sumit Bajaj, one of the three sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Park Street gang-rape case in Kolkata, has moved the High Court on Wednesday challenging the trial court’s order, The Telegraph reports.
With the appeal, Bajaj also filed an application for bail.
On 10 December, Calcutta Sessions Court had pronounced Bajaj, Naser Khan and Ruman Khan guilty of gang-raping Suzette Jordan on the night of 5, February, 2012, in a moving vehicle after she had left a Park Street night club.
The trio were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment which is the minimum punishment for the charges slapped on them.
The Delhi Police recovered 50 sophisticated pistols and 100 cartridges from specially made cavities in the boot of a car, their biggest arms haul in two years.
Savinder Kumar had a “weapon pack” to suit every criminal on his client list and his warehouse was in the boot of his car.
According to The Times of India, Kumar would take orders on WhatsApp or Imo, a video chat software, and deliver at the client’s doorstep.
Kumar, a resident of Meerut, later told cops he had set up a “factory” in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, with the help of local manufacturers and assembled and supplied weapons on demand.
A Sessions Court in Chennai convicted six persons and sentenced them to life imprisonment in connection with a clash between cadres of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and residents of a Dalit settlement near Marakkanam. The clash had led to the killing of a PMK worker on 25, April, 2013.
The Hindu reports that the cadres assaulted one Ramesh belonging to the colony that led to clashes. Selvaraj, a PMK cadre, was later found dead at the Kazhikuppam bus stand.
The Villupuram police registered a case, which was investigated by the CB-CID, Metro Wing, Chennai.
A 35-year-old former priest attached to a temple was arrested from South Mumbai for allegedly raping and blackmailing a 38-year-old married woman, police said on Thursday.
The police said Parmar had allegedly been raping the woman since 2013.
A resident of Kalbadevi in South Mumbai, Parmar allegedly called the woman to his house in 2013 under the pretext of offering her a “special prasad”. He then spiked her drink and clicked nude photos with him while she was unconscious, police said.
He was produced before a local court today which remanded him in police custody for five days.

A 65-year-old woman, Mithilesh Jain, was found dead in her apartment in South Delhi’s BK Dutt Colony in New Delhi on Monday night was in fact strangled, investigation reports revealed.
According to The Times of India, the police initially thought that it was a natural death, but a case of murder was lodged on Wednesday after the autopsy report confirmed strangulation marks on the woman’s throat.
The incident was reported on Monday when a household help who works at Mithilesh’s younger daughter Mukta’s office went to her apartment to get the keys for a locker. He found the door unlocked and the woman lying on the floor .
Mithilesh’s family members claimed that valuables, including gold jewellery and an iPad, were missing since the incident.
Ryan International School might have disregarded safety norms while building an amphitheatre above the water tank in which Class I student Divyansh Kakrora drowned.
The police have said students could go up to the edge of the tank and Divyansh might have fallen inside while playing there.
Sources said arrests would be made after receiving the autopsy report on Thursday , and the school might face action if it is found to have flouted safety rules, The Times of India reports.
The police have asked for the school’s sanctioned building plan and will compare it with the actual construction.
A 30-year-old deaf and mute woman was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a private bus at Pushp Vihar in south Delhi on Monday night. The woman was on her way back after getting food from a shop. She went inside the bus to shelter herself from cold and planned to have her dinner there.
The accused, Dheeraj Bhardwaj, who runs a salon in the area, was arrested after the woman filed a complaint with the help of a translator.
According to The Times of India, Dheeraj was on a bike with two of his friends and saw the woman getting inside the bus. He tried to force herself on her, while his associates guarded the vehicle.
However, a child playing nearby heard the woman cry and immediately informed the policemen patrolling the area.
Yadav Singh, Chief Engineer from Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Wednesday by the CBI for allegedly “abusing his official position in awarding contracts and causing wrongful loss to the government exchequer”.
In August last year, the SP government in UP moved the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court’s decision to order a CBI probe into alleged irregularities by Singh.
According to The Indian Express, officials said Singh refused to cooperate and was placed under arrest. He will be produced in the designated court in Ghaziabad on Thursday.
The CBI had earlier conducted searches at 12 locations in Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad in connection with its probe against Singh.
In September, an investigation by The Indian Express showed that the family of SP Rajya Sabha member Ram Gopal Yadav, cousin of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and uncle of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, got a sweet deal from Yadav Singh via an aide.
