1. FCRA Violation: CBI to Probe Foreign Funds to Teesta-linked Firm

In fresh trouble for social activist Teesta Setalvad, government today asked CBI to probe the receipt of over Rs 3 crore by private firm Sabrang Communication and Publishing Pvt Limited (SCPPL) linked to her from foreign donors, including US-based Ford Foundation, in alleged violation of FCRA rules.

2. Accused in Mumbai Hooch Case got Stock From Licensed Methanol Firms

Investigation revealed this morning that the accused in Mumbai hooch case used to liason with licensed methanol companies in Gujarat and buy off their surplus stock.

Vapi-based supplier, Kishore Patel, was arrested by the crime branch on Thursday in connection with the Malwani hooch tragedy.

Investigators will look into the role of these companies as well as local excise officers.

3. On Protest Congress MLA, 22 Others Arrested in Rajasthan

Congress MLA Ashok Chandana was arrested yesterday along with 22 other persons, including party district President C L Premi, while leading a demonstration against the state government in Bundi, Rajasthan police said.

Twelve policemen and 20 others were injured when protesters allegedly started pelting stones at the police.

The MLA was leading a group of around 2000 workers to the collector’s office protesting the issue of compensation to rain-hit farmers.

4. One Arrested in Rifle Loot Case in Muzaffarnagar

Police claimed yesterday to have solved rifles loot case of March 9 with the arrest of an accused, carrying reward of Rs 12,000, and recovered the firearm from his possession in Charthawal area in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

The accused identified as Vivek, member of Rahul Khatta’s gang, was arrested and a self-loading rifle, four live cartridges and four looted cars were recovered from his possession, Superintendent of Police Sarvan Kumar said.

5. Job Racket Unearthed in Kolkata

Kolkata police yesterday unearthed an interstate job racket.

The arrested cheated unemployed graduates from Hyderabad after promising them jobs in the Indian railways, police said.

One person, Palash Das from south Kolkata was arrested in this connection and the police is on a lookout for the other one.

6. JM Personally Inspects Post Mortem of Central Jail Inmate

A Judicial Magistrate today carried out inspection and inquiry into the mysterious death of a life convict at in the Central prison in Coimbatore, which had triggered a protest by about 1000 inmates.

Karuppasamy of Mettupalayam was convicted in a murder case and was undergoing life sentence.

He died yesterday of reported chest pain that he complained about on June 24.

7. Censor Board Officer Arrested for Accepting Bribe for `U’ Certificate

A Hyderabad officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was arrested yesterday by CBI on the charge of demanding bribe for issuing `U’ (universal) certificate to a Telugu film.

G Srinivas Rao, the officer, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000 from Prabhakar Reddy, producer of the film `Andala Chandamma’, for issuing `U’ certificate, CBI superintendent of police Chandrasekhar said.

8. HC Serves Notice to Ahmedabad Police for Selling Alcohol to Bootleggers

The Gujarat High Court yesterday issued notices to the state government and the Director General of Police, acting on a plea which alleged that Valsad local police provided liquor to bootleggers.

the plea alleged that the police did not show the entire stock of seized liquor and even sold it to bootleggers.

The next hearing of the matter to July 10.

9. Woman Set Ablaze by Husband’s Friend

A man allegedly set his friend’s wife on fire after a failed rape attempt on her in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The 35-year-old was left with severe injuries, at Pipari village under Bhoganipur of Kanpur Dehat region, police said.

The woman is admitted to Kanpur Medical College Hospital and is in serious condition.
