'Women raped at parties, not melas' - Chairperson of Women’s Development Corporation

Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation chairperson Bharathi Shankar created a controversy on Friday, saying women were raped at "unwanted parties, but not at jatres (melas)".

She was speaking at a panel discussion on women's safety during the launch of 'A Billion Eyes' campaign by B.Pac and Bangalore City police. The campaign calls upon bystanders to intervene when women are harassed.

Bharathi was answering an audience question on whether women’s empowerment was equal to women's safety. Listing measure for women’s safety, Bharathi said, "When women go to jatre, do they get raped? They do get raped at unwanted parties."

They also seized seven motorcycles from the minors and arrested their parents who were booked under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Additional commissioner of police (Traffic) R Hitendra said, “These boys indulge in bike wheelies for thrills and to post the photos and videos of their stunts on social media to impress others. Nobel Prize Has A Bengaluru Connection

The 2017 Nobel Prize for Physics has a Bengaluru connection as a city-based institute and scientists have contributed to it.

This year’s Nobel Prize for Physics was conferred to three scientists namely Rainer Weiss, Barry C Barish and Kip S Thorne under the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project for their discovery of gravitational waves 100 years after Einstein’s General Relativity predicted it.

It celebrates the direct detection of gravitational waves arriving from the merger two large black holes in a distant galaxy a billion light years away. Gravitational waves carry information about their dramatic origins and about the nature of gravity that cannot otherwise be obtained. This opens a new window to astronomy since gravitational waves are an entirely new way of observing the most violent events in space.
