As the deadlock between the Centre and the protesting farmers continues, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday, 4 February, met the family members of the farmer who lost his life during the tractor rally in Delhi on 26 January.
Vadra attended the 13th day rituals of Navreet Singh in Uttar Pradesh’s Dibdiba village in Bilaspur tehsil in the afternoon and attended the 'Antim Ardas' (prayer meeting) while paying her condolences.
She was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Kumar Lallu, senior party leader Jitin Prasada, Youth Congress Chief Srinivas BV and others.
While addressing the gathering later, she said that the martyrdom of Navreet would not go in vain. "The whole nation is with you. Everyone knows that farmers are being wronged. To term farmers as terrorists is unacceptable," she was quoted as saying by IANS.
Without naming the Prime Minister, Vadra said that leader was of no use who could not “Listen to the pain of the poor and the farmers and say that their suffering is his suffering” reported The Hindu.
Later on Thursday, Vadra tweeted that she met the family members of Navreet at his prayer meeting and that the family has demanded an investigation into the death of their son. She also said that the BJP is torturing the protesting farmers but they should not be fearful of the government.
Samajwadi Party leader and Leader of Opposition in the UP Assembly, Ram Govind Chaudhary, and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary were among other leaders who met the deceased’s family on Thursday.
Navreet lost his life during the tractor rally on 26 January when his tractor collided with a police barricade.
The Delhi Police had released a video showing a protester speeding and running over barricades with his tractor near ITO, resulting in the vehicle overturning. A post-mortem report revealed that the protester died in the accident.
Earlier, vehicles in Vadra's cavalcade collided with each other on Hapur Road while she was on her way to Rampur. However, nobody was reported to be injured.
