The Budget Session of the Parliament kicked off on 31 January with President Pranab Mukherjee addressing members of both Houses.
The joint session, held a day before the Union Budget, kicked off in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Terming the session as historic, Mukherjee hailed both, the advancement of the budget cycle as well as the merger of the rail and general budgets. He praised the citizens for cooperating with the demonetisation move.
President Mukherjee also announced the results of various government schemes. He backed the government’s pro-poor schemes.
Stressing on ‘Nari Shakti’, he also lauded sportswomen like PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar, who won laurels for the country.
He said that the revision of Maternity Benefit Act will support pregnant women at the workplace.
