Prime Minister Modi must learn to take risks in defence procurements like Rajiv Gandhi did in 1985-89, argues Shekhar Gupta in an opinion article published on The Print. Gupta says that despite the criticism aimed at the Bofors scam and its political toll on the Congress, the ‘defence modernisation’ brought on by Gandhi benefitted the armed forces.

In the current context, where defence procurement is almost at a standstill, Gupta writes that it is imperative that PM Modi reverses the poor record of previous BJP governments and initiates aggressive defence procurement.

Here are the main arguments put forth by Shekhar Gupta.
