The son of Ram Sutar, the sculptor who has designed the Statue of Unity, has been accused of breaching the trust of homebuyers by allegedly accepting 90% payments but not starting construction, the Times of India reported. He has been named along with three of his fellow directors at a construction company.

According to the report, the accused Anil Sutar claimed that he has been cheated by his friends who siphoned off the money he had invested, and that he had filed a case at the National Company Law Tribunal in this regard.

A group of homebuyers had filed two separate FIRs (in Feb 2017 and March 2018) against the five directors of Airwell Business Park Private Ltd, police told TOI.

According to the FIR, the developer had offered to build an 18-storey commercial project, Intellicity, in tech zone IV of Greater Noida West in 2012. Bookings were taken for office spaces, showrooms, along with residential flats and villas, the report said. Possession was promised by 2017, but the company hardly progressed with the construction work.

Asserting that he was unaware of the business transactions, Anil said that he has been taking steps to help the buyers.

“I myself have been suffering over this. It was all managed by two other directors and I have never signed on a single builder-buyer agreement,” the report quoted Anil Sutar as saying.
