The House Finishes Its Shortest Session in 20 Years

The winter Session of the Parliament, which ended on Friday, 5 January, was its shortest session in 20 years.

The Parliament passed a total of nine bills in the session, with the debate on the Triple Talaq Bill dominating the proceedings.

As Parliament was adjourned on Friday, the bill that seeks to criminalise instant divorce with three years of imprisonment for Muslim husbands has been deferred further. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on 28 December 2017.

There was an uproar in the Rajya Sabha after the Opposition's motion on the bill. The Opposition demanded it be sent to a select committee. To this, Arun Jaitley said that saboteurs of the bill should not be made members of the select committee.

The house was adjourned sine die at 1:10 pm.
