Netaji’s Aide & INA Veteran, ‘Colonel’ Nizamuddin, Dies 

Nizamuddin made news last year when he became the oldest person to open a bank account at the age of 116.

Netaji’s Aide & INA Veteran, ‘Colonel’ Nizamuddin

Indian National Army veteran and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s aide, Nizamuddin, passed away in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh on 6 February. The last surviving soldier of the INA died a few months before his 117th birthday.

Nizamuddin, who served as Netaji’s driver and bodyguard, fought alongside Bose in Myanmar.

He served in the Indian National Army from 1943-45 and accompanied Bose when he went to meet Hitler to seek help to secure freedom for India. He also accompanied Bose during his trips to Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

The “Colonel” is survived by his 107-year-old widow, three daughters and four sons. His family said he had succumbed to a prolonged illness.

Nizamuddin made news last year when he became the oldest human being on the planet. He also became the oldest person to open a bank account. In 2014, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi.
