A court in the United Kingdom rejected Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya’s appeal against freezing of his assets. Indian banks are looking to recover more than $1.55 billion from Mallya, who is currently based in London.
Judge Andrew Henshaw also allowed the registration of a 2017 judgment of the Indian Debt Recovery Tribunal, which if enforced, could allow Indian banks to attach and even sell Mallya’s assets in the UK.

The Supreme Court collegium has recommended two names for appointment as permanent judges of the Allahabad High Court, reported PTI.
The collegium, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, and justices J Chelameswar and Ranjan Gogoi, had met on 4 May. It recommended two additional judges of the Allahabad High Court - justices Krishna Singh and Rajiv Lochan Mehrotra - for appointment as permanent judges of the high court.

Almost two years after abandoning her poll campaign midway in Varanasi, United Progress Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi hit the campaign trail in Karnataka on Tuesday, 8 May, launching a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.
Addressing a public rally in Vijayapura, Bijapur, Gandhi emphasised on the Congress party's pro-poor orientation, while accusing the PM Modi of "insulting not only the farmers but also the state of Karnataka".
KP Oli, the Prime Minister of Nepal, will receive PM Narendra Modi in Janakpur on 11 May. Around three projects will be jointly inaugurated by both the leaders. Focus of PM Modi's visit will be to push connectivity, power and inland waterways, sources told news agency ANI.

Mortal remains of R Thirumani, who had suffered head injuries after being hit by a stone during clashes in Jammu and Kashmir’s Narbal, will reach the Chennai airport by 7:15 pm tonight.
Thirumani was reportedly travelling in a bus that was attacked by stone-pelters on Srinagar-Gulmarg road.
The Supreme Court today told the Centre that it was in "sheer contempt" of its direction on Cauvery water sharing for failing to frame a scheme for distribution of water between the southern riparian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territory of Puducherry.
The top court directed the Secretary of the Union Water Resources Ministry to personally appear before it on 14 May with a draft of the Cauvery management scheme to implement its verdict on water sharing between four states including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
It had in February asked the Centre to formulate a scheme to ensure compliance of its judgement on the decades-old Cauvery dispute.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra told the Centre that once the judgment has been delivered on the issue, it has to be implemented.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, 8 May, reportedly accepted that he is ready to become the prime minister if his party emerges as the "biggest" party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, reported news agency ANI.
Gandhi said he is "pretty confident" that Narendra Modi would not be the next prime minister.
If the Congress acts as a "platform" (with other parties in a coalition), the BJP does not stand a chance of winning the elections, he said at a function where he launched the "Samruddha Bharat Foundation".
"It is highly unlikely that BJP will form the next government, and the second part is that it is close to impossible that Modi will be the next prime minister," Gandhi said.
He said the opposition unity would not allow the BJP to remain in power.
Gandhi asserted that the Congress would win the Assembly polls in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Two Congress MPs withdrew their plea challenging rejection of the impeachment notice against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra by Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday, 8 May.
After a 45-minute hearing, a five-judge bench headed by Justice A K Sikri declared the petition as dismissed as withdrawn.
The petitioners, represented by Kapil Sibal, withdrew the case after the judges refused to provide them with information on how the 5-judge bench was set up - concerns were raised that the CJI himself had decided which judges would hear the case.

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear a petition moved by two Congress MPs over the rejection of the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Dipak Misra.
The senior-most judges - Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Jospeh - who had held the controversial 12 January press conference in which they had revolted against the CJI by raising litany of allegations against him, have been kept out of the matter.
The impeachment motion was earlier moved in the Rajya Sabha which was rejected by Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on 23 April.
The two leaders, who have filed the petition are Rajya Sabha Congress MPs Partap Singh Bajwa from Punjab and Amee Harshadray Yajnik from Gujarat. They have challenged the rejection of the impeachment motion against CJI by the Rajya Sabha Chairman, claiming that the reasons given were "wholly extraneous" and not legally tenable.

A dust storm, with a wind speed of 70 kmph, hit Delhi and areas near NCR at approximately 11.20 pm on Monday, 7 May. At least six arriving flights, and one departure were delayed because of the dust storm.
Two people were killed and one person suffered minor injuries as fire broke out in three ambulances in South Delhi’s Sheikh Sarai area, reported News18.
The weather office warned that thunderstorms, squalls and gusty winds are likely to hit at least 14 states and two Union Territories, over the next five days, till 11 May.
