3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Shimla

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale hit Shimla at 6.05 pm, ANI reported.

No casualties were reported. More details are awaited.

Kumaraswamy Swearing-In on 23 May, Floor Test on 24 May

JD(S) leader and Karnataka Chief Minister-designate HD Kumaraswamy said he will take oath along with Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Wednesday, 23 May.

The floor test will be conducted on 24 May. Congress's KR Ramesh Kumar will be the Speaker of the state’s Vidhana Soudha.

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary in Karnataka KC Venugopal said the party would get 22 portfolios, while 12 portfolios, including the chief minister's portfolio, would be given to the JD(S).

JJ Hospital Resident Doctors Call Off Strike in Mumbai

Resident doctors of JJ Hospital in Mumbai called off their strike after they were assured that their demands would be fulfilled within 3 months.

Doctors of JJ Hospital in Mumbai have been on strike for past four days after two of their colleagues were allegedly assaulted following the death of a patient.

This after The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) alleged that despite repeated requests, there was inadequate security at the hospital.

11 People Dead in Tuticorin Anti-Sterlite Protests

11 people were confirmed dead and as many as thirty people injured in the anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.

DMK Working President MK Stalin is on his way to meet the Tamil Nadu chief secretary at the Secretariat to discuss the issue.

Stalin has reportedly cancelled his visit to Bengaluru, where he was expected to take part in HD Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in ceremony, in light of the incident.

At least 9 people have been confirmed dead and as many as a dozen people have been left injured in the anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.

Following clashes, police resorted to lathicharges, and tear gas to disperse the crowd. even protesters retaliated by pelting stones.

The protesters are demanding the closure of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, and have been protesting for a 100 days so far.

Rajasthan Building Collapse: Several Feared Trapped Under Debris

A three-storey building collapsed in Sardarpura B Road in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, leaving several trapped. 3 people have been rescued, but many more are still feared to be trapped under the rubble.

Rescue operations are currently underway.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has appointed Digvijaya Singh as the chairman of the coordination committee, and Jyotiraditya Scindia as the chairman of the election campaign committee for Madhya Pradesh.

The family of former Mumbai Congress chief Kripashankar Singh was acquitted in a disproportionate assets case by the Sessions Court in Mumbai.

The Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai police had filed a chargesheet against Singh, a former chief of Mumbai Congress as well as his relatives.

The chargesheet, filed in April 2015, was based on the complaint of an activist that Singh had amassed assets disproportionate to his declared sources of income.

Lance Naik Killed in Explosion in Jodhpur

A lance naik was killed in an explosion in the cantonment area of Ratnada police station in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The deceased jawan was identified as Gunasekhar P, according to a report by ANI.

The explosion reportedly took place in an area used by the 10 Para, that is generally used for military exercises. The deceased is believed to be a part of the same regiment.

In the final stages of launching the new Air Sewa inititative, the Minister of State of civil aviation Jayant Sinha announced various reforms on Tuesday, 22 May, under the new scheme.

Jayant Sinha has announced that no cancellation charges will be levied on the customers if tickets are cancelled within 24 hours of booking. He also clarified that if a flight is cancelled because of airlines’ fault, then the passenger has to be compensated or the ticket has to be refunded.

One Dead, 10 injured in Anti-Sterlite Protest in Tuticorin

One person has been killed and 10 others reportedly injured in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin where a protest between the locals and the police turned violent on Tuesday, 22 May.

Locals in Tuticorin have been protesting against the expansion of Sterlite plant for several months. As a part of their protest, they had planned to gherao the collector’s office as well as the Sterlite plant.

However, the police resorted to lathi charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

JJ Hospital Doctors Continue Strike

Resident doctors of the state-run JJ Hospital continued their strike for the fourth day on Tuesday, 22 May, against the assault of two of their colleagues following death of a patient.

They decided to continue the protest after their talks with authorities concerned failed to break the deadlock, an official told PTI.

The doctors have been on a strike since Saturday, demanding sufficient security in the hospital to protect them against any outrage by patients' relatives.

They said hospitals were provided security guards following similar incidents earlier, but these personnel were manning the entrances.

Nipah Virus Claims Two More Lives in Kozhikode Medical College

Two more people suspected to be infected by Nipah Virus have reportedly died in Kozhikode Medical College hospital on Tuesday, 22 May. Both the patients were being treated in an isolation ward and their samples have been sent for tests.

Speaking to the media, Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja Teacher has said, “As of now, we have test results of 18 samples of which 12 have tested positive for Nipah Virus. 10 of them have already died and 2 of them are in critical condition. However, no new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours.”

BS Yeddyurappa Alleges Foul Play in Karnataka Elections

A day after voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines were found in a shed in Vijayapur district of Karnataka, BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa has written to the election commission alleging grave irregularities in conduct of assembly polls in Karnataka, reported ANI.

“This is not the first time that irregularities in the conduct of elections were brought to the notice of EC and officials holding elections at ground level. Prior to polling we brought many such irregularities to notice of concerned officials, but in vain,” Yeddyurappa claims.

Prime Minister Modi Signs Off From Russia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home after an "extremely productive" informal summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi on Monday. The two leaders reviewed the complete range of India-Russia relations as well as global issues and underlined the need for a multi-polar world during their first ever informal summit in this Black Sea coastal city.

Addressing the media at the meet, Modi said that the two had discussed the operationalisation of the International North South Transport Corridor, as well as BRICS.

Jamia University's Website Hacked

The official website of the Jamia Millia Islamia University was hacked early Tuesday, 22 May, with a message reading “Happy Birthday Pooja.”

Though the university website is back up, no group or person has claimed responsibility for the attack. The college has not issued an official statement either.

Live Updates: Syrian Army Drives ISIS Out of Area Near Damascus

The Syrian army has restored control over all areas surrounding the capital Damascus for the first time since early in the seven-year-old war, after pushing Islamic State militants out of a south Damascus pocket, the military said.

Pro-Syrian government forces have been battling for weeks to recover al-Hajar al-Aswad district and the adjacent Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp from Islamic State since driving rebels from eastern Ghouta in April.

In a televised statement, Syria's army high command said al-Hajar al-Aswad and Yarmouk had been cleared of militants.

"Damascus and its surroundings and Damascus countryside and its villages are completely secure areas," the statement said, adding that the army would continue to fight "terrorism" across Syria.
