RBI to Issue New Rs 10 Notes Soon; Old Notes to Remain Valid

The new notes – having Chocolate Brown as the base colour – will be a part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.

The Reserve Bank of India will soon be issuing new Rs 10 notes, it said, in a press release issued on Friday, 5 January.

The new notes – having Chocolate Brown as the base colour – will be a part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.

On the reverse side, the new notes have motif of Sun Temple, Konark, to depict the country's cultural heritage, the RBI said.

The notes have geometric patterns and other designs on both the sides, the RBI added.

Salient Features of the New Note

The bank also listed the salient features of the new notes. They are as follows:

Obverse (Front)

  1. See through register with denominational numeral 10
  2. Denominational numeral १० in Devnagari
  3. Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre
  4. Micro letters 'RBI', ‘भारत ', ‘INDIA' and '10'
  5. Windowed demetalised security thread with inscriptions ‘भारत’ and RBI
  6. Guarantee Clause, Governor's signature with Promise Clause and RBI emblem towards right of Mahatma Gandhi portrait
  7. Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right
  8. Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype (10) watermarks
  9. Number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side

Reverse (Back)

  1. Year of printing of the note on the left
  2. Swachh Bharat logo with slogan
  3. Language panel
  4. Motif of Sun Temple, Konark
  5. Denominational numeral १० in Devnagari

The dimension of the banknote will be 63 mm x 123 mm.

Old Notes Continue to be Legal Tender

The RBI added that while it is releasing new notes, it is not discontinuing the old ones. The old Rs 10 denomination notes would continue to be legal tender.

The new Rs 10 notes follow the release of new notes of Rs 50, Rs 200, which were released by the government on 25 August 2017.
