Najeeb Was Not Mentally Disturbed: Missing JNU Student’s Brother

The missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, Najeeb Ahmed, was on anti-depressants and was taking medicines for insomnia and obsessive compulsive disorder, said a report in the Hindustan Times quoting police sources.

The report also suggested that a prescription from the doctor was accessed by the investigators.

The Quint spoke to Najeeb’s brother, Mujeeb, who said that his brother was taking sedatives/sleeping pills for insomnia. He also said that he was sure that Najeeb was in the correct state of mind when the incident took place and he could not have been missing because of being mentally disturbed.

But the report alleged that he visited the doctor thrice, weeks before he went missing and that the investigators found out that he may have been emotionally disturbed.

While speaking to ANI, his mother and sister also refuted police’s claim that he was mentally or emotionally disturbed.

The report faced a lot of backlash on social media as JNU students raised questions on the police’s investigation.

Najeeb’s Mother Meets Home Minister Rajnath

Najeeb’s mother and sister went to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh later on Tuesday afternoon. After meeting him, Najeeb’s sister spoke to reporters and said, “We hope that Delhi police works on the right path to find him and not defame him.”

Rajnath Singh assured Najeeb’s mother that proper action will be taken to find her son. Singh told them that Delhi Police has set up a special team to pursue the case and he was personally taking stock of the progress in the probe.

Joint Commissioner of Police, Deependra Pathak, said that over eight teams have been deployed to find Najeeb. The police are hopeful of finding Najeeb soon, he added.

Earlier, his mother had been detained, along with 300 other JNU students near India Gate as they demanded investigation into the disappearance of Najeeb.

Najeeb Ahmed, an MSc student of the School of Biotechnology, went missing on 15 October following a brawl on the campus allegedly with members of ABVP, the night before.
