The Delhi High Court on 16 May transferred the case of the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmad to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Najeeb had disappeared on 15 October 2016 without a trail.
A two-member bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Rekha Palli transferred the matter to CBI with immediate effect. It was done on a plea by the student's mother and after the Delhi Police said it has no problem with such a direction.
The court said that the probe by the CBI would be supervised by an officer not less than the rank of a Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
While transferring the matter, the court noted that the Delhi Police had implemented all directions and suggestions given by the court.
The matter will be taken up next on 17 July.
The Delhi police has filed a chargesheet against a man, arrested for allegedly making a ransom call to the relatives of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, demanding Rs 20 lakh for his release.
The chargesheet filed in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Dass claimed that 20-year-old Shameem had made the ransom calls to one of Ahmed's relatives, assuring him of Najeeb’s release after the payment.
According to the court sources, the chargesheet claimed that the accused had even given them a location where they were asked to come with the ransom amount.
Shameem was arrested in January from Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh.
Najeeb Ahmed, who was a first year MSc (biotechnology) student, went missing on 15 October 2016 from his hostel. He disappeared post an alleged altercation with ABVP members in the JNU hostel.
A reward of Rs 10 lakh has been announced by Delhi Police for any information about him.
