A man was thrashed by a mob for allegedly carrying beef in Nagpur’s Bharsingi village on 12 July. Salim Ismail Sheikh is the head of the minority’s cell division of BJP in Katol in Maharashtra, reported The Hindu.

He was returning home on his bike when five or six men accosted him at a bus stop in Bharsingi village of Nagpur rural, and asked him to get off the two-wheeler.

The men asked him to show the meat he was carrying in the storage compartment of the bike. When he resisted, the men allegedly thrashed him, Nagpur rural Superintendent of Police Shailesh Balkawade said.

“They hit me and left me there. The police took me to hospital,” Salim told ANI.

The victim’s wife told ANI that Salim was transporting mutton on his bike, for an event that was being organised by a local mosque committee, when he was intercepted. She alleged that Salim fainted after being hit with sticks.

He received injuries on his back, his chest and legs...The attackers should be punished for what they’ve done.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the case – Ashwin Uike (35), Rameshwar Taywade (42), Moreshwar Tandurkar (36) and Jagdish Chaudhari (25) – a police official said.

They have been booked under IPC sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), he said.

The section 326 of IPC attracts a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. The SP said the meat has been seized and sent to a forensic lab in Nagpur for testing.
