Nine days after Mumbai Mirror broke the story that Afroz Shah had suspended the campaign of cleaning Versova beach after alleging that his volunteers were abused by goons and the BMC had failed to pick up the garbage, the lawyer-turned-activist has decided to resume the drive again. Shah will be back at the beach with his volunteers this weekend, he announced in a tweet on Wednesday.
After Shah had suspended his 109-week campaign on November 19, the BMC stepped in and continued the clean-up of the beach on its own. Following Mirror's reports on the development, including Shah's interview on November 22, top politicians such as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray persuaded Shah to resume the campaign, promising him all help in the campaign.
"Thank you to the multitude of people from India and around the globe who stood up for mother nature. Gratitude and love to each of them. Week 111 schedule. Sat and sunday: 3 to 5 pm - Marine litter cleaning. Saturday: 9 to 11am - Awareness to stop littering in to ocean," Shah tweeted, announcing that he would resume his campaign.

The state unit of the Congress party and the NCP have invited Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to lead a joint morcha highlighting the government’s failure to deal with various issues on December 12. Sources said the decision was taken after noting the good response received by Gandhi’s campaign rally in Gujarat.
“His rallies are great crowd pullers and he has highlighted the issues of farmers quite well. He can highlight on how the state failed on the farm loan waiver scheme,” said a senior Congress leader. “We have invited Rahulji to lead the morcha. Senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has already agreed to attend,” said state Congress chief Ashok Chavan.
The NCP had planned the morcha on December 13 since it was party chief Sharad Pawar’s birthday a day before. However, the party later decided to join hands with the Congress and hold the morcha on December 12.

THE MUMBAI Police Crime Branch Wednesday arrested the 42-year-old relative of an 11-year-old boy whose body was found in mangroves in Versova. While the Juhu police had initially ruled out any foul play when the body of Rishi Waghela was recovered, the Crime Branch found that the boy had been murdered by a distant relative Ravi Waghela, who had tried to sodomise the boy. When the boy refused, Ravi, a scrap dealer, allegedly throttled the boy to death, an officer said.
Senior Inspector of Crime Branch (unit 9) Mahesh Desai said they had been investigating the case after the boy was reported missing by his parents and an FIR was registered at Juhu police station on November 22. The boy’s body was eventually found in a patch of mangroves in Versova on Sunday. “During investigation, it came to light that the boy’s uncle Ravi Waghela had lured him to the isolated patch by telling him that he will help him catch a pigeon. He then pulled off the boy’s shirt and tried to sodomise him,” an officer said.
When the boy resisted, the accused tried to overpower him and killed him by throttling him, the officer added. “The accused said he was scared that the boy would tell his parents if he allowed him to go. Hence, he killed him and fled from the spot,” an officer said. The accused later also spoke to the family and pretended to help them find the boy after missing posters of Rishi were put up last week, an officer said.
