1. BMC Clears Six Acres Near Bandra Reclamation

As part of its project to create urban forests in the city, the BMC on Wednesday cleared six acres near Bandra reclamation along the Mithi river and planted 2,000 trees, including mangroves. Last month, the civic body had identified five plots in the city for the purpose.

Sharad Ughade, H-West ward officer, said: “In a month, the BMC will plant another 1,000 trees and the place will be thrown open to the public. Around one million litres of water treated daily from the Bandra Sewage Treatment Plant will be used for watering this urban forest.”

With the Maharashtra government granting the status of a Planning Authority (PA) to the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) for 14,904 cessed properties in Mumbai, six different agencies are now tasked with land use planning and regulation of construction activity in the financial capital.

Despite objections raised by the Mumbai municipality, the Devendra Fadnavis-led cabinet on Wednesday cleared a move to appoint the MHADA as the PA for the specified properties. The special tag accorded to MHADA will see the municipality cease to be the planning agency in these areas while still being responsible for meeting the region’s infrastructure requirements, said sources.

4. Patripool Bridge Shut a Year Ago; Kalyan Residents Mark ‘Death Anniversary’

Around 20 residents of Kalyan gathered at the Patripool rail overbridge and marked its death anniversary by putting garland and lighting candles on it on Thursday.

The move was aimed at drawing authorities’ attention for closing the rail overbridge a year ago and not providing the residents with an alternative bridge.

“On 29 August last year, the bridge was shut. We decided to gather to mark this. It was aimed at making the authorities realise how negligent they are,” said Shakil Khan, 40, a resident. The old Patripool bridge was shut for vehicles dismantled by the railways.

5. APMC Market at Vashi Gets 200 More Shops

The long wait for the opening of extended APMC vegetable market at Vashi has ended.

On Thursday, 285 shops in the new market were inaugurated by revenue minister Chandrakant Patil after the government’s approval for change of use to include sale of processed agriculture products.

Spread over 11,230 sqm, the market has shops of 300 sqft each. Inaugurated in 2011, the market had been lying unused for more than eight years. Lack of adequate customer response had led to the shops shutting down.
