A forensic doctor at JJ Hospital, who was a part of the team that conducted the post-mortem of Byculla women’s jail inmate Manjula Shetye, said the nature of injuries suggested she was assaulted at least five hours before she was brought dead to the hospital. The doctor further said Shetye, 38, had died “half-an-hour before she was taken to JJ Hospital, which is just about a km from the Byculla jail.

Shetye’s death last Friday sparked a riot at the Byculla jail, when more than a hundred prisoners marched to the terrace, burning books and furniture. State Women’s Commission chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar said on Thursday that the autopsy revealed Shetye had “multiple injuries”, giving credence to allegations that she was tortured inside the jail.

The JJ doctors found at least 16 contusions on Shetye’s body. “It appears she was struck on the head with a blunt object at least five times, her lip was injured,” the forensic doctor said. He ruled out sexual assault – the initial first information report by the Nagpada Police said a stick was inserted in her private parts – but said there were contusions on Shetye’s chest, abdomen, buttocks, and legs.

The Mumbai unit of the Congress has decided to create a dedicated cell within the party for saints and priests called Mumbai Sadhu Sant Congress. The move is aimed at ridding the party of the tag of minority appeasers and broad-basing its appeal.

Vakola Hanuman Mandir’s head priest Om Dasji Maharaj will be the convener of the cell and its first convention will take place on Sunday at the Wakola temple. Over 200 saints and priests of various temples across the city are expected to attend.

The saints and priests will be felicitated by Mumbai Congress chief and former member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam. As a part of the felicitation, Nirupam will wash their feet and offer them dakshina.

The move, however, has not gone down too well with some sections of the party. The state spokesman for the party Ratnakar Mahajan said the Congress does not promote any particular religion. “Religion is a matter of personal faith.

There is no need to bring it in public life,” he said, and added that even the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which believes in religion-based politics, does not have such a cell.
