The management of Kolkata’s MP Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School, on 4 December, suspended a staff member accused of having sexually assaulted a student.
After the GD Birla School child sexual assault incident. The mother of a former student of MP Birla School told NDTV that her daughter was molested, “not once but at least twice by school staff.”
The school then suspended Manoj, who was a part of the school’s non-teaching staff in connection with the case. He was later arrested by the Kolkata police under sections of POCSO.
In a statement, the school authorities said, a complaint was received from parents of a girl student about alleged sexual misconduct against her in September, 2017, but the complaint did not point out any individual.
Hours of CCTV footage were reviewed by the school and the police, the statement said, adding that the police also questioned several members of the support staff and teachers.
“We are committed to ensuring that the child gets justice. However, we also hope that no member of the staff of our school should be judged in the matter except according to law. We are confident that members of the staff are committed to the safety of the children. Anyone found wanting in this regard will be prosecuted as per law,” it further said.
She also told NDTV, “If the school and the police had acted on our complaint, then this little girl (from GD Birla) may have been spared the horror. The molesters would be scared of facing some police action. But nothing was done.”
In the GD Birla case, two physical education teachers, Abhishek Ray and Mohammad Mofizuddin, were arrested after the 4-year-old girl identified them when shown photos by the police.
