In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, DMK working president MK Stalin has urged for the fast-track of river-linking projects across the country, in view of the drought that has hit farmers’ livelihoods.
Claiming that Tamil Nadu’s neighbouring states were blocking sources of irrigation, Stalin said that they were also constructing check dams in “violation of inter-state agreements”. According to the Indian Express, Stalin in his letter said:
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Stalin urged the Prime Minister to act upon the mandate prescribed by the Supreme Court, with regard to river-linking projects. A Deccan Chronicle report stated that the court had issued 16 direction with regard to the fulfillment of the project.
He also added that according to the Supreme Court in the “2012 River-Linking Judgement”, the project will save several people from hunger and also curb destruction caused by floods.
