The Congress on Sunday, 23 June slammed the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the killing of a Dalit girl in Unnao and alleged that law and order had collapsed in the state.
"The Ajay Singh Bisht rule has become synonymous with Dalit atrocities and heinous crimes," Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.
The 11-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district. The incident took place on the intervening night of Thursday-Friday in Safipur police circle.
"The law and order situation has collapsed due to the incidents in Kushinagar, Pratapgarh, Muzaffarnagar, Gorakhpur," Surjewala said, referring to recent incidents of crime in the state.
The rape and then killing of the minor girl by hitting her with bricks was very shameful, he said.
"If this is not jungle rule, then what is?" he asked.
Surjewala's attack comes days after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, citing several reports of killings and rapes in Uttar Pradesh, had said innocents were being subjected to cruelty, but the government was not concerned, PTI reported.
"In Uttar Pradesh, innocents are being subjected to cruelty. Women are being pushed into an atmosphere of fear, but the UP government is not concerned," Vadra had said.
The girl, who was sleeping outside her house, was found missing when her father woke up in the middle of the night, IANS reported.
"Initially, I thought that she might have gone to nearby fields to go to the toilet. However, when she did not return for long, I along with my family and neighbours launched a search and found my daughter's body lying in an orchard. Her head was badly crushed with bricks," he said.
Unnao Superitendent of Police M.P. Verma said that a case of rape and murder under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) has been registered. He said teams had been formed to arrest the accused and the body had been sent for post mortem.
