An angry mob vandalised a police van in Bogra area under Jamuria Police Station of West Bengal’s Asansol and blocked the National Highway 2 for at least half-an-hour, on the night of Thursday, 20 December, following the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl from the region, ANI reported.
The family of the girl and locals alleged that she had been raped before being murdered. The mob, consisting mainly of locals from the girl’s village, demanded that the culprit be arrested immediately.
Following the protests by the mob, Laxmi Narayan Meena, the Asansol Commissioner of police told ANI that two men had been detained in connection with the case and that investigations were underway.
The victim had reportedly left her house at around 7 pm on Thursday, 20 December, to go buy groceries. When she didn’t return for a long while, her family set out in search of her, and later found her body near the house. The girl’s body was later sent to the Asansol District Hospital for postmortem, ANI reported.
Although the police attempted to bring the tense situation under control, the mob had claimed that they would not cease their protests, until the police assured them of launching an immediate investigation in the case.
