Major Kumud Dogra lost her husband Wing Commander D Vats in an Indian Air Force plane crash on 15 February. Her daughter is five days old and will never get to see her father. Notwithstanding the grief that comes with loss, Major Dogra attended her husband's funeral in full Army uniform with her newborn cradled in her arms. People on social media, and the country at large, cannot stop praising the officer's courage.
An image of the Dogra, walking in with her baby in her arms, to pay her last tributes to her husband is doing the rounds on social media. People are flooding the internet with praise and appreciation for the strong woman, and love for her baby.
According to an NDTV report, the aircraft was a two-seater, one of the many small planes that the IAF maintains.
The crash, in Assam's Majuli island, is suspected to have taken place due to a technical fault. The other pilot killed was Wing Commander Jai Paul Singh.
Villagers, on the island, told authorities that they saw the aircraft go up in flames.
A court of inquiry has been asked to ascertain the cause.
(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
