Six people died in a major fire that broke out inside SSJ International and Virat Hotel in Lucknow’s Charbagh during the early hours of Tuesday, 19 June.

Yogi Announces Compensation

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to grievously injured.

“More than 50 people were rescued from the building. Cause of fire is still to be ascertained. If we find any lapse on hotel's part during our investigation, we will take strict action against the people concerned,” S Pandey, IG Lucknow, told reporters.

Fire Caused by Short Circuit: Lucknow SSP Deepak Kumar

It took the fire department nearly two hours to completely douse the fire after it received a call at 6 am, NDTV reported. According to preliminary reports. the fire is said to have been caused by a short circuit.

Lucknow SSP Deepak Kumar told CNN-News18 that the fire "was caused by a short circuit in the basement, which moved upwards."

Department officials told NDTV that all rooms had been thoroughly checked and most of the guests were evacuated on time.

UP Police File FIR

An FIR has been registered by the Uttar Pradesh police against the owners & workers of MSJ International & Virat Hotels in connection with the fire that broke out on Tuesday, 19 June, which killed six people.

A case has been registered under sections 285,337,338 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code.
