As Narendra Modi took over as the country's Prime Minister for a second term on Thursday, 30 May, after he was sworn in along with other Union ministers, the Congress congratulated the NDA on its new government.

In a tweet, the grand old party said "We wish them the best & look forward to working with them on the growth & development of India & all its citizens."

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, his mother Sonia Gandhi, and former prime minister Manmohan Singh attended the mega swearing-in ceremony, which was attended by various countries’ heads of states and a galaxy of other high-profile guests.

The event comes at a time when the Congress is reeling from one of its worst electoral performances yet, and is on the hunt for a new identity and leader to steer the party forward.

The Congress, on 23 May, after it was decimated by the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, had tweeted another another congratulatory message to the saffron party.

"Congratulations to @BJP4India & @narendramodi on a decisive victory. The people of India have made their decision & we respect their mandate. We'd like to thank all our workers for their hard work. We wish the new govt the best & look forward to working towards India's future," the tweet read.

Rahul Gandhi had sent out another tweet saying that he "accepts the verdict of the people of India."

Meanwhile, Congress Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Thursday tweeted that his party has decided not to send spokespersons to television debates for a month.

However, the tweet did not specify whether the Congress will continue to engage with the print and digital media.

The Congress had won just 52 of the 542 seats in the recent elections, leaving the Narendra Modi-led BJP with a mammoth 303 seats.
