Congress MP Shashi Tharoor issued a statement in response to the Patiala House Court’s summons with regard to the Sunanda Pushkar case, terming the charges ‘preposterous and baseless.’
Earlier in the day, the court had taken cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police for abetment to suicide and committing cruelty on his wife, Sunanda Pushkar.
The court has summoned Tharoor on 7 July.
The Delhi Police said it has "professionally" investigated the charges against Shashi Tharoor and will defend them in court after the Congress leader was summoned as an accused by a Delhi court in the case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death.
Dependra Pathak, chief spokesperson Delhi Police and special commissioner of police (Traffic), said, "We have investigated the case professionally. We will defend the case in the court and do a proper follow-up of the court proceedings."
The Delhi Police had on 14 May accused the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram of abetting Pushkar's suicide and told a city court that he should be summoned as an accused in the four-and-half year-old case, claiming there was sufficient evidence against him.
Shashi Tharoor issued a statement via his Twitter, terming the charges against him to be ‘preposterous and baseless’, and is the ‘product of a vindictive campaign’ against him.
Tharoor’s counsel Vikas Pahwa told ANI that his team would decide on a course of action after accessing a copy of the chargesheet.
The court has issued summons against Shashi Tharoor for 7 July, stating that “there exists sufficient grounds to proceed against Dr Shashi Tharoor for commission of offence under Sections 306 and 498-A of IPC.”

The 3,000-page charge sheet filed in the court on 14 May named Tharoor as the accused under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
On 28 May, the public prosecutor argued before the court about the grounds on which the charge sheet should be accepted by the court.
