It’s Development vs Obstructionism: Modi

Highlights from PM Narendra Modi’s speech:

  • Government should be continuously scrutinised but a false sense of despondency should not be created.
  • Some people are compelled to criticise because of political compulsions. But there are two things. On one hand there is development, on the other there is criticism. People know which to choose.
  • Two years ago, no newspaper or TV news bulletin was untouched by reports of corruption and scandal.
  • More than Rs 36,000 crore leakages stopped in education. And this is just the beginning, it’s a new morning.
  • During our work we have found more than 1.62 crore fake ration cards we have found.
  • In Haryana alone there were six lakh fake names in kerosene oil subsidy lists.
  • In LPG gas subsidy lists we found so many fake names, so much leakage – we saved you nearly Rs 15,000 crore.
  • Due to our campaign of LED bulbs, we will save 20,000 MW electricity. But that is not newsworthy.
  • Earlier there used to be politics in the name of how many subsidised LPG cylinders you can get. But today more than 1.13 crore people have given up their subsidy. Is this not change? Can there be a bigger example of public participation in a country’s development?
  • I asked my tax officers, why do you think people are dishonest? You must have faith in the people of the country.
  • We have taken a decision. For category 3 and 4 employees of the government, there will be no interview. A computer will decide the best candidates based on merit. This will end corruption.
