1. PoK a Part of India, One Day Will Have Physical Jurisdiction: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

Signalling a qualitative shift in Delhi’s stated position on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, a career diplomat known for his careful choice of words and diplomatic nuance, Tuesday said India expects it will have “physical jurisdiction” over PoK “one day”.

This is the first time in recent years that an External Affairs Minister has spoken of taking physical possession of PoK — and this goes much beyond the 1994 Parliament resolution on Jammu and Kashmir.

2. Sardar Patel Inspiration for Jammu and Kashmir Decision, Says PM Modi

Praising the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said he was the “inspiration” for the government’s decision on J&K to resolve a decades-old issue and “walk on a new path”.

Speaking at a rally at the Statue of Unity site, Modi, who turned 69 Tuesday, said: “Today, India is trying to complete all the tasks that have remained incomplete since Independence. For 70 years, the people of Jammu and Kashmir were discriminated against as a result of which the entire country suffered in the form of violence, separatism and incomplete aspirations.”

In a sharp attack on the Centre’s Kashmir move, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday that the government is trying to remove “nationalist” leaders like Farooq Abdullah to create a political vacuum in Jammu and Kashmir that will be filled by terrorists.

On Monday, former chief minister Farooq Abdullah was detained under Jammu and Kashmir’s stringent public safety law that gives the administration the right to detain a person without trial for two years. An order by the state government said the former chief minister’s residence will be treated as a temporary jail.

Three incidents, dating back to March, came to light after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or DGCA carried out an audit of the airline between 15 April and 18 April, said the official, who requested anonymity. The suspensions have been ordered since.

The other, Radhey Gupta, an OBC, is in a police station lock-up 8 km away along with his wife and daughter — for killing the 23-year-old by allegedly tying him to a charpoy and setting him on fire, to save his family’s “honour”.

On Sunday, Abhishank Pal (23), fondly called Monu, was killed by family members of Shivani Gupta, with whom he was reportedly in a relationship with, in what police said was an honour killing.

Since 5 August, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has issued as many as 230 orders for detention of people across Kashmir under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA). Maharashtra's ruling BJP and Shiv Sena combine are facing a problem of plenty, with nearly 30 leaders from the Congress and Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party joining their ranks. It is not yet clear if the parties would contest the coming state election as an alliance, but if they do, finding tickets for these leaders would be a problem.

Political circles are abuzz with speculation that the election might end up being a BJP versus Shiv Sena battle. The two parties, already divided over seat sharing, are also vying for the chief minister's post.
