1. Senior Kashmir Editor is Shot Dead
Veteran journalist and editor of local newspaper Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari and his two personal security officers (PSO) were gunned down by militants at Press colony in Srinagar on Thursday, 14 June.
Bukhari, who was in his 50s, was leaving his office in Press Enclave at Lal Chowk for an iftar party when he was shot, officials said. While two of the personal security officers (PSO) guarding him were killed, a civilian was also injured, they added.
State police chief SP Vaid said that it was around 7.15 pm, the iftar time, that Bukhari came out of his office in Press Enclave and was boarding his car when he was attacked by militants.

2. J&K: Jawan Abducted by Militants Found Dead
The body of the army jawan who was abducted by militants was found in Gusoo on Thursday, 14 June. The jawan, identified as Aurangzeb from Rajouri, was picked up by militants from Kalampora area in Pulwama when he was proceeding on leave for Eid.
He belonged to 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and was at present posted with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles camp at Shadimarg in Shopian, officials said.

3. Disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs: Madras HC Passes Split Verdict, Status Quo Continues
Setting the suspense in motion for some more time, the Madras High Court on Thursday, 14 June, passed a split verdict in the case against disqualification of the 18 rebel AIADMK MLAs in Tamil Nadu.
While the Chief Justice Indira Banerjee upheld the disqualification order passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal, Justice M Sundar quashed the Speaker’s order.

4. India Rejects UN Report on Rights Violations in Kashmir, Calls It ‘Fallacious, Motivated’
A first-of-its-kind UN report on alleged human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir provoked a strong reaction on Thursday, 14 June, from India, which described it as “fallacious, tendentious and motivated” and a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In the Kashmir Valley, a separatist leader welcomed the report as did the Pakistan foreign office in Islamabad.
The report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights, titled ‘Report on the Situation of Human Rights in Kashmir: Developments in the Indian State of J-K from June 2016 to April 2018, and General Human Rights Concerns in Azad J-K and Gilgit-Baltistan’, sought an international enquiry into the alleged abuses.

5. Govt Wakes up to Dust Pollution, Halts Civil Construction Activities in Delhi till 17 June
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal banned all construction activity in the capital until Sunday, forced to act by toxic air pollutants being carried to the capital by dust-laden winds blowing in from neighbouring states.
Most other parts of northern India were also covered by haze, including the mountain state of Himachal Pradesh.
At least 13 departing flight from Delhi airport and 11 Delhi-bound flights were cancelled because of the dust pollution, which prompted the authorities to advise people to avoid staying outdoors for too long.

6. Lok Sabha 2019 Polls: Akhilesh Yadav to Contest From Kannauj, Mulayam From Mainpuri
Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj, which is represented at present by wife Dimple Yadav, while his father Maulayam Singh Yadav will contest from Mainpuri.
Akhilesh made the announcement at a meeting of SP workers at the party headquarters in Lucknow.
He said : “I will contest from Kannauj while netaji (Mulayam) will contest from Mainpuri.”

7. Rampant Russia Pummel Saudi Arabia 5-0 in World Cup Opener
Denis Cheryshev struck twice for Russia as the World Cup hosts thumped Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match of the tournament in Moscow on Thursday, 14 June.
Iury Gazinsky scored after 12 minutes and Cheryshev added a second before the break after coming on as an injury replacement for Alan Dzagoev.
Artem Dzuyba netted a third before terrific late efforts from Cheryshev and Aleksandr Golovin wrapped up Russia's first win since October to launch their Group A campaign in style.

8. Delhi L-G 'Works From Home' as CM, Ministers Lay Siege to Office
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal on Thursday, 14 June, lashed out at L-G Anil Baijal, accusing him of orchestrating the “strike” by the bureaucrats on directions from the top. That was also an indirect attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sunita Kejriwal’s strong words came after she along with her mother-in-law and the wives of deputy CM Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain were not allowed to meet their spouses.

9. JEE-Advanced Extended Merit List Issued, 14,000 More Students Clear Exam
Close to 14,000 more students have cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced test, the gateway for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), with the Joint Admission Board (JAB) on Thursday, 14 June, releasing an extended merit list in line with the directions of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.
The new list shows that as many as 31,980 candidates have cleared JEE-Advanced, compared to the June 10 list under which 18,138 students had qualified for admission to the elite engineering schools.
