6 Held for Violence in Anti-Sterlite Stir Detained Under NSA

Six people arrested for their alleged involvement in the violence during anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin last month were on 11 June detained under the National Security Act (NSA), police said.

The six were arrested on 22 May and are presently lodged in Palayamkottai Central Prison. They were detained under NSA as per the orders of the Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi, police said.

The NSA empowers the Central and State governments to detain a person for maximum period of 12 months to prevent him/her from acting in any manner prejudicial to national security.

Kathua Case: SSP Assures Court That Witnesses Will Appear Before

A senior officer of Jammu and Kashmir's Crime Branch on 11 June assured the district and sessions court, conducting the trial in the Kathua rape and murder case, that the police would ensure the presence of prosecution witnesses during the hearing, lawyers said.

The court, which has started recording the statements of witnesses in the Kathua rape and murder case, last week expressed dismay over the absence of witnesses despite 17 summons being issued.

NGT Directs Hill States to File Report on Forest Fires

The National Green Tribunal has voiced concern over recurring forest fires in the hill states and directed them to inform it about the steps taken by them to control such incidents.

A bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Jawad Rahim impleaded the Ministry of Environment and Forests as well as the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal in the case.

China on 11 June presented an upbeat picture of the talks between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping at Qingdao, saying they agreed to "cherish" the "positive momentum" generated by their Wuhan meeting and implement the "important consensus" reached at the summit.

This comes after Modi and Xi held talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the port city of Qingdao.

PMO 'Unleashing' LG, Bureaucrats, Agencies Against AAP Govt: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday, 11 June, accused the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Centre of "unleashing" the lieutenant governor, IAS officials and agencies such as the CBI, ED, IT Department and the Delhi Police on the AAP government to stall its functioning.

He also alleged that Delhi government officials, who have been boycotting meetings with AAP ministers for four months after the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, are being "threatened" into continuing their strike.

"The strike is being orchestrated by the PMO and coordinated by the L-G (Anil Baijal)," Kejriwal said at a press conference.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for routine check-up and investigations, ANI reported on Monday, 11 June.

P Chidambaram Slams Modi Govt Over High Fuel Prices

Addressing a press conference on Monday, 11 June, Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram slammed the Modi government for the high fuel prices.

"There is widespread anger about artificially fixed prices of petrol, diesel and LPG. There is absolutely no reason why prices should be higher today than what they were in May-June 2014. It is nothing but a case of fleecing the helpless consumer," Chidambaram said.

Making a pitch for bringing petrol and diesel under GST to reduce the prices, Chidambaram also questioned why the BJP was blaming the states when the party ruled over the Centre and most of the states.

He also lamented the trend of rising inflation, saying, "Inflation is on the rise. Inflation expectations are high. No more proof is necessary than the hike in the repo rate a few days ago. Interest rates will rise, throwing more burden on consumers and producers.”

Two Youths Arrested in J&K After Snatching Weapons from Security Forces

Two youths were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday while they were escaping to Shopian after snatching weapons from security personnel at a shrine at Shahdara Sharif in Rajouri on Sunday. One INSAS rifle was recovered from them upon their arrest.

Fifteen Afghan Security Personnel Killed in Taliban Attack

At least 15 Afghan security personnel were killed in a Taliban attack in the Kunduz province of Afghanistan on Monday, 11 June, reported Pajhwok Afghan News.

Earlier, an explosion and gunfire were also heard in the Jalalabad city of Nangarhar province in the country. Gunmen are reported to have attacked the education department’s building in Jalalabad, but there is no information on the number of casualties as of yet.

Six Students Die After Bus Runs Over Them in UP's Kannauj

Six students died in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, 11 June, when a bus ran over them at the Agra-Lucknow Expressway near Kannauj. Three others were admitted to a hospital in critical condition, reported ANI.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each for those injured in the accident.

BJP Worker Found Murdered in Maharashtra

A BJP worker, named Kamlakar Pawankar, was found murdered along with four other members of his family in Nagpur’s Aradhana Nagar in Maharashtra, reported ANI.

CBI May Book Haryana Policemen in Gurugram School Murder Case: Report

The Central Bureau of Invesigation (CBI) may book Haryana policemen who were involved in the initial investigation in the Gurugram school murder case, in which a seven-year-old was killed in September 2017, reported CNN-News18.

According to CNN-News18, the CBI has asked for the list of policemen who were present at the spot initially, and may name them in a supplementary chargesheet.

Two People Lynched in Maharashtra's Aurangabad

Two people were beaten to death and six others were seriously injured by a mob in Maharashtra on Friday, 8 June, on the suspicion that they were thieves.

The incident took place in Chandgaon village in Aurangabad district. After the incident, the police registered a case against more than 300 persons.

Voting is underway in Bengaluru's Jayanagar Assembly constituency. The election was countermanded after the death of BJP candidate BN Vijayakumar.
