An eight-year-old boy and a 30- year-old man were killed and five others injured after a speeding car lost control in Kamothe in Navi Mumbai.
The incident happened on an internal road in Sector 6 of the city at around 8pm on Sunday. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed a swerving Skoda car ramming into several vehicles and then hitting pedestrians, two of whom died.
The video showed the car then speeding off. The official identified the deceased as Sarthak Chopde (8) and Vaibhav Gurav (30), both residents of Kamothe.
“The five injured have been admitted in MGM Hospital here. Efforts are on to nab the driver of the car,” the Kamothe police station official said.

Two 'kanwariyas' drowned while taking a bath in the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh's Budaun district on Monday, police said.
Divyam Saxena (23), Aman Gupta (22) and Devendra (30) slipped into deep water while bathing at Ataina ghat in Usaihata area.
Devendra was saved by the locals but the others drowned. Their bodies were later fished out and sent for post-mortem, police said.

Nine people were killed due to lightning strikes in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Monday.
One person was killed each in Banda and Chitrakoot districts, three died in Hamirpur and four were killed in Jalaun district on Sunday afternoon, the officials said.
Shyamlal Yadav (19) was killed in Banda's Bhahua village in Baberu area, while Bhagwandeen Kori (45), Ghunnu Pal (70) and Ramashray (46) were killed in Hamirpur, Superintendent of Police Banda Ganesh Saha said.
He said the other deceased were identified as Sushil (8), killed in Chitrakoot and Puranpal (33), Shobharani (50), Shivadhar Singh (40) and Mahadev (60), killed in Jalaun.

At least five people were killed and several others wounded when a car bomb was detonated Monday outside a hotel in the Somali capital Mogadishu, a security officer and witnesses said.
“There are casualties. I can confirm the death of five people: three civilians and two government security officers at the checkpoint” outside the Afrik Hotel where the blast occurred, Abdullahi Ahmed, a security officer who witnessed the explosion, told AFP.
Fire broke out at the MTNL exchange building at S V Road in Mumbai’s suburban Bandra in the afternoon.
Fire engines have been rushed to the spot, an official said, adding there were no reports yet of anyone being injured in the incident.

A man was shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants outside his office in Sector-60 in Noida on Monday morning. Imran Ahmed, in his 20s, was killed around 8 am outside Uflex Company where he worked as a project supervisor.
"He was in the night shift and completed work around 7 am. When he was leaving the building around 8 am, some unidentified bike-borne men opened fire at him," Circle Officer, Noida 2nd, Piyush Kumar, said.
The officer said Ahmed was rushed to a hospital with a bullet injury to his neck but he did not survive. Kumar said a case has been registered at the Sector 58 police station and investigation is underway.

Given the risks associated and volatility in the prices of private cryptocurrencies, Inter-Ministerial Committee has recommended banning of cryptocurrencies in India and imposing fines and penalties for carrying any activities connected with cryptocurrencies in India.
Police filed a 4271-paged chargesheet against 14 people in the case of fire at ‘Takshashila Arcade’ in Surat that claimed lives of 22 students in May. Eleven out of these have been arrested while three have been declared absconders.

Nine persons, including eight children, were killed and 15 others were injured when a pickup van collided with a mini truck in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to provide all possible help and treatment to the injured.
The accident took place around 11 pm on Sunday near Sadikpur village under Hafizpur police station limits. The victims were returning to their village Salepur Kotla in the pickup van after attending a marriage on Bulandshahr road, they said.
The mini truck coming from the opposite direction collided with the van which was carrying 20 children. The impact of the accident was so severe that the van was torn apart and its occupants were thrown out on the highway, police said.
The truck driver fled the spot after the incident, they said.
Police said the children were in the age group of 8 to 14 years, while the other deceased is a 20-year-old man.

A Class VI girl student was on Monday found hanging in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh, police said.
An official identified her as Madhu Maravi and said she was found hanging from the railing of a flight of stairs in the school situated in Dhamangaon area.
"Madhu Maravi hailed from Bhimkundhi village here. It is not yet clear if she committed suicide or was killed. A note has been found at the spot which states she was not feeling good at school. It is being probed," Superintendent of Police ML Solanki said.
The victim's father, Tiwari Singh Maravi, however, alleged she had been killed and claimed the handwriting in the suicide note did not match that of his daughter.

Sri Lanka on Monday extended the state of emergency by a month in the interest of maintaining “public security” after the deadly Easter Sunday bombings that killed nearly 260 people.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena issued a special gazette notification extending the state of emergency by a month, despite his statement in June that it will not be further extended.
Sri Lanka initially imposed the emergency on 23 April to crack down on the nine suicide bombers who attacked three churches and as many luxury hotels 21 April, killing 258 people and injuring 500 others.
The CBI carried out searches at the residence and office of a senior officer of the NPCC and unearthed properties worth over Rs 15 crore in connection with a probe into a bribery case, officials said Monday.
The searches took place in connection with its probe against two Guwahati-based NPCC officers who allegedly received a bribe of Rs 25 lakh for clearing bills pertaining to construction of BSF border outposts.
The agency searched the office of Manohar Kumar, the then incharge chairman-cum-managing director (now director, finance) at the corporate headquarters of National Projects Construction Corporation Limited.
Kumar was CMD incharge between 2018 and April this year.

Former Union minister Kalraj Mishra was sworn in as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh in a ceremony at the Raj Bhawan on Monday.
He replaced Acharya Devvrat, who has been shifted to Gujarat.
Mishra, 78, had resigned from the Narendra Modi-led government as Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in 2017 after he crossed the age of 75, the BJP's unofficial age limit for holding an elected post.
The Uttar Pradesh leader did not contest the Lok Sabha elections this year.

Russian air strikes on a market in northwestern Syria killed 27 people on Monday, a monitor said, in the latest violence to plague the country's last major opposition bastion.
Moscow, however, denied it was responsible, calling the reports "fake".
“The Russian air force was not carrying out any missions in this part of Syria,” said a defence ministry statement.
The jihadist-run Idlib region, home to some three million people, is supposed to be protected by a months-old international truce deal, but it has come under increased bombardment by the Syrian regime and its ally Russia since late April.

The Supreme Court on Monday fixed 6 August for hearing the plea of senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel pertaining to his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2017 which has been challenged by rival BJP candidate Balwantsinh Rajput in the Gujarat High Court.
Patel has challenged the order of the Gujarat High Court's by which it had dismissed his plea questioning the maintainability of Rajput's election petition.
The apex court had declined to interfere with the 26 October, 2018 order of the high court which had said that Rajput's allegations required a trial.
Eight people were arrested on Monday for allegedly lynching four tribals, including two women, in Jharkhand's Gumla district on the suspicion that they were practicing witchcraft, police said.
The arrested were among a group of people who had allegedly dragged the four elderly persons out of their homes at Nagar-Siskari village and beat them to death with sticks in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, according to a statement.
Blood-soaked sticks suspected to have been used in the crime were also seized, it said.

A man fled after pushing his lover into a gorge in Uttarakhand’s Pauri, police said on Monday.
He had brought the woman with her from Delhi on the pretext of taking her to his village. The personnel associated with the 108 ambulance service rescued the woman after her cries were heard by nearby villagers.
The woman, who luckily got away with only fractures in her hand and leg, was being treated at the district hospital, he said. Hailing from West Bengal, the woman had been living with the man for the past two years in Delhi.
When they were going on foot towards his village, the man pushed the woman into the gorge in the Addwani area and ran away, Singh said.
Efforts were underway to trace him, the official said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted searches at 11 different places in district of North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, Patna (Bihar), Agartala (Tripura) and New Delhi. Incriminating documents have reportedly been recovered during the raids.
Searches were conducted in connection with a case registered against Partha Chakraborty and others of Chakra Infrastructure Ltd over allegations of cheating people to the tune of Rs. 87 crore.
