Heavy Rains Lash UP, 16 Dead

The heavy rains that lashed the state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday claimed at least 16 lives, with 12 more being injured, an Indian Express report said.

Rains are expected to continue on Monday and Tuesday in both eastern and western UP, the meteorological department reportedly said.

Karnataka: Counting Underway for Urban Local Body Polls

The counting for the the polls to 102 urban local bodies in Karnataka is currently underway. The voting took place on 31 August, reported ANI.

Sensex at 38,761, Nifty Crosses 11,700 Mark

The markets opened higher on Monday, 3 September, with Sensex at 38,761.67, up by 116.60 points. Meanwhile, Nifty was at 11,700.90, up by 20.40 points.

Petrol, Diesel Prices Increase

The petrol price increased by Rs 0.31/litre to Rs 79.15/litre in Delhi, while the diesel price increased by Rs 0.39/litre to Rs 71.15/litre on Monday. In Mumbai, the price of petrol on Monday stood at Rs 86.56/litre (increase by Rs 0.31/litre), while that of diesel was Rs 75.54/litre (increase by Rs 0.44/litre).

Two Reuters Reporters Sentenced to 7 Years in Jail by Myanmar Judge

A court in Myanmar has sentenced two Reuters journalists to seven years in prison for illegal possession of official documents, a ruling that comes as international criticism mounts over the military's alleged human rights abuses against Rohingya Muslims.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo had pleaded not guilty to violating the colonial-era Official Secrets Act, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

They contended they were framed by police.

Congress Leads in Karnataka Civic Polls Vote Count

The Congress was ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the counting began on Monday, 3 September of votes cast for Karnataka's 105 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), the State Election Commission (SEC) told IANS.

The Congress was ahead by 52 seats by winning in 814 civic body seats across the state, while the BJP has won in 762 seats as of 11.45 a.m., according the results declared by the SEC on its website.

So far, results were declared in 2,171 seats of the total 2,709 where the ULB election was held on 31 August.

Man Dead in Bihar After Ambulance Fails to Reach Him on Time

A man in Bihar’s West Champaran district was declared dead, allegedly after an ambulance failed to reach him on time, ANI reported. He was earlier admitted in Bagaha district’s sub-divisional hospital and was said to be in a critical condition.

The hospital in-charge Dr SP Agarwal told ANI that they have demanded senior authorities to probe the matter.

Bombay HC Slams Maharashtra Police on Elgar Parishad Case

The Bombay High Court raised the question as to why Maharashtra police held a press conference on Elgar Parishad case when the matter was sub-judice in courts, ANI reported.

The court adjourned the petition demanding National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquiry in Elgar Parishad matter for 7 September because copies of the petition were not served to all concerned persons.

Minor Allegedly Molested by Security Guard at Shelter Home in Meerut

A minor was allegedly allegedly molested by a security guard at a shelter home in Meerut, ANI reported.

Speaking on the matter, investigating officer Pushpendra Kumar told ANI that an investigation is underway and statements will be recorded.

“We cannot disclose details until probe is completed. We will submit an investigation report by 4 September,” officer added.

BJP MLA's Son Threatens to Shoot Jyotiraditya Scindia

Bhartiya Janta Party MLA Uma Devi Khatik's son Princedeep Lalchand Khatik, in a social media post, threatened to shoot Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, IANS reported.

Lalchand Khatik wrote in a Facebook post: "Jyotiraditya Scindia, you have Jiwajirao's blood running in your veins, who killed Jhansi ki Rani. If you step in Hatta then I will shoot you. Either you will die or I will."

His statement comes ahead of Scindia's scheduled visit to Hatta district to hold a rally on 5 September.

Youth Shot During Kashmir Valley Clashes

A young man sustained critical injuries during clashes between security forces and stone-pelters in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district after a massive search operation was launched in around two dozen villages, police said to IANS.

Security forces used tear smoke shells and pellets to quell the protesters, injuring Fayaz Ahmad Wani, who was shifted to the Pulwama District Hospital, the police said.

The search operation began following reports about the presence of militants in the villages, IANS added.

13 People Killed After Van Falls Into Gorge in Uttarakhand

Thirteen persons were killed and two others injured Monday when a tempo traveller fell into a 200-metre deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district following a landslide, PTI reported.

The incident occurred at Shanglai, about 8 km beyond Bhatwari in the district on the Rishikesh-Gangotri highway, when the tempo traveller, carrying 15 passengers, was returning from Gangotri, District Disaster Management officer Devendra Patwal said to PTI.

Post Floods Leptospirosis Takes 12 Lives in Kerala

12 people died from Leptospirosis in Kerala beween 1 August and 3 September, reported ANI. Since 1 August, 372 confirmed cases of Leptospirosis have been reported in Kerala.

This has occurred in the aftermath of the Kerala floods. With sewage water getting mixed with all water sources, standing in these stagnant pools can lead to leptospirosis.

Eight Arrested for Selling Newborns to Childless Couples

Eight people have been arrested for allegedly selling newborn babies to childless couples, police sources said on Monday, 3 September.

The arrests were made over the last month.

The police sources said so far only the couriers, who were involved in delivering the babies, have been arrested and they are looking for others connected with the racket.

They said the kingpin of the racket, suspected to be a woman, is yet to be arrested.

China Blocks Australian State Broadcaster's Website ABC

China has blocked access to the website of Australia's national broadcaster for breaching Beijing's internet rules and regulations, ABC said on Monday, 3 September.

It comes a year after the Australian Broadcasting Corporation began running a Chinese-language service.

ABC said access to its website and apps was blocked on August 22 and it has since been trying to find out why.
