The Venezuelan government on Thursday said it has barred opposition leader Juan Guaido from holding public office for 15 years, though the National Assembly leader brushed off the measure and said it would not derail his campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro.
The announcement by state comptroller Elvis Amoroso, a close Maduro ally, cited alleged irregularities in Guaido's financial records and reflected a tightening of government pressure on an opposition movement backed by the United States and its allies.

Trade talks with China are progressing "very well", US President Donald Trump said, as top negotiators from the two countries Thursday began meetings to resolve their tariff war.
US trade negotiators arrived in Beijing on Thursday and the talks began with a working dinner. The meetings will last the entire day Friday.
The fresh round of talks are the latest in a series of exchanges between the two nations on trade.

At least nine members of Ghazni police force of Afghanistan were killed in a sudden attack by Taliban militants in central Ghazni province, the provincial police confirmed.
The attack happened at around 1am early on Friday on a police outpost in the Police District 3 (PD3) of Ghazni city, the provincial police said in a statement.
Mujib Mahmoudi, the head of the PD3 Police Headquarters, was also killed in the attack, the statement added.

President Ram Nath Kovind arrived today on a three-day visit to Bolivia, the first high-level visit to the Latin American country since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

A 7-year-old boy was left with a cracked skull and suffered critical head injuries after allegedly being assaulted by his mother's partner in Kerala.

The BJP today cited the Samjhauta train blast case judgment to assert that the probe focussed on establishing the Congress's "political theory of Hindu terror", as it accused the opposition party of "smearing" Hindus on the basis of "forged" evidence for political benefits.

Rangers at a national park in northeastern Thailand have rescued six baby elephants that were trapped in a mud pit.
Park officials said the elephants were unable to climb up the pit's slippery banks.
Rescuers took five hours on Thursday to dig a path for them to clamber out.

The Pakistan Army shelled forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, a defence spokesman said.

The Delhi High Court today sought a response from Delhi University on a plea which alleged that the varsity was not providing maternity leave to its ad hoc female professors.
The petition, by a female professor of Aurbindo College, contended that under the Maternity Benefit Act she was entitled to six months leave, but the varsity did not grant her the relief as she was not a permanent employee and was employed on an ad hoc basis.

A consumer rights activist today moved to Delhi High Court seeking removal of the stay on the Centre's circular banning sale and manufacture of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems like e-cigarettes and e-hookah.
The high court had on March 18 put on hold the central government's 27 November, 2018 circular, saying as the products were not a "drug", authorities did not have the jurisdiction to issue such a direction.
Justice Vibhu Bakhru had said prima facie the products do not fall within the definition of a 'drug' under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear a plea of CBI against mobile service providers Vodafone and Airtel that they were not cooperating with the investigation in Saradha chit fund scam case.
CBI claimed that they were not providing it full call detail records (CDRs) of the accused in the scam despite repeated requests.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna issued notice and sought the reply of mobile service providers by 8 April, the next date of hearing.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah today said reports about prosecution withholding critical information about the Samjhauta Express blast case from the court was a reflection of the respect the BJP-led central government had for institutions of the country.
"The judge presiding over the special NIA court has himself said that the prosecution withheld critical information that would have allowed a guilty verdict to be passed. Clearly, this government has no respect for institutions," Abdullah said.

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution that calls upon countries to prevent and counter the financing of terrorism, especially in its new forms.
Initiated by France, Resolution 2462 is intended to update existing resolutions and adapt them to new forms of financing of terrorism and new challenges in this field.
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin, participating in the Security Council open debate on 'Preventing and Combating the Financing of Terrorism', said New Delhi specifically welcomes the recognition in the resolution of the essential role of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in setting global standards, especially in the context of preventing and combating money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing.

"Institutional anarchy" and "complete lawlessness" have been prevailing in West Bengal as the police recently tried to arrest custom officials for checking the luggage of wife of a TMC leader at the Kolkata airport, the Centre alleged in the Supreme Court today.
The custom officials at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata were "intimidated, harassed and threatened" by the local police for checking the baggage of wife of Trinmool Congress MP, who is a relative of Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee, it said.

Three labourers were killed and eight others injured on Friday when a tractor trolley in which they were travelling rolled down a deep gorge near Pokhri in Chamoli district.
The vehicle fell into a 500 metre deep gorge about 25 km from Pokhri in the district, Pokhri SHO Anirudh Maithani said.
It took three hours to pull the bodies out of the gorge, he said.
The labourers killed in the accident were identified as Indra Bahadur Bora and Gita Devi, both from Nepal, and Dharamvir from Bijnore.
The injured have been hospitalised, he said.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday reaffirmed that he would stop new sanctions on North Korea, saying the country was suffering and he valued his relationship with its authoritarian leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump shed light on his tweet a week ago that took Washington by surprise in which he said he was rolling back sanctions on North Korea that the Treasury Department had planned.
"They are suffering greatly in North Korea. They're having a hard time in North Korea," he told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
"And I just didn't think additional sanctions at this time were necessary. Doesn't mean I don't put them on later but I didn't think additional sanctions at this time were necessary," he said.
