Solar projects with 3,200 mw capacity will be set up in Maharashtra in the next two years, Power Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said Wednesday.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has appealed to Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik to release journalist Aasif Sultan, arrested last year for alleged links with militant groups, and drop the charges against him.
No chargesheet has been filed against Sultan, who works for a weekly newspaper and was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on August 27 last year, the CPJ, a global organisation advocating press freedom, said in a letter to the governor.

The bodies of a 28-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were found Wednesday in a well in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, police said.

Punjab Congress on Wednesday suspended its MLA from Zira from the party on the charge of indiscipline, days after his public outburst at an event. The state unit had earlier issued a show cause notice the legislator Kulbir Singh Zira after he had alleged inaction against contractors selling illicit liquor.

The government Wednesday approved signing of a pact between India and Australia on mines safety.
The approval was given by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Goa government has converted the old sub-jail in Mapusa town near here into a detention centre for foreign nationals who violate visa norms, a senior police official said Wednesday.
The Public Works Department had earlier been asked to renovate the old jail, located in Mapusa town, so that the foreigners, who are overstaying in Goa after expiry of their documents, can be lodged there, Superintendent of Police Bosco George said.

As many as 429 tigers have been poached and killed since 2008 across the country, with the maximum of 71 in Madhya Pradesh during the period, revealed data obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Year-wise, the maximum killings took place in 2011 when 80 tigers were poached, while the minimum of 17 occurred in 2015, according to the data from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), under the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Over three lakh new voters were added during the ongoing special summary revision (SSR) in Jammu and Kashmir, election authorities said Wednesday.
"During the ongoing SSR of photo electoral rolls, with respect to January 1 as the qualifying date, 3,07,984 new voters were added, which is highest as compared to the last four years additions," the officials said. Besides, they said, 1,25,931 voters were deleted from the roll and 94,659 corrections and modifications were made in the particulars of electors.

Over 2,300 Muslim women from India will go on Haj this year without 'Mehram' or male companion as all those who applied under this category have been exempted from the lottery system, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Wednesday.

A 5-year-old boy died after being thrashed by his step-father, in Delhi’s Kapashera, on 10 Januaru. DCP South West says, "We've registered a murder case. According to the medical report, the child suffered multiple injuries including, one on head which was the cause of the death."
DCP South West says, "On 12 Jan, the child died due to injuries. The step-father has confessed to beating the child. The mother presented wrong facts during the investigation. We've concluded that death is a result of a conspiracy of which the mother was also a part."
