1. Mumbai: Canadian ‘Molested’ by Employee at Juhu 5-Star

An employee of a 5-star hotel in Mumbai’s Juhu has been arrested for allegedly molesting a Canadian woman staying there.

The 29-year-old woman said when she brought the incident to the notice of the hotel management, she was not offered help and was told to lodge a police complaint on her own.

The guest then checked into another hotel near the airport and lodged a complaint with the Santacruz police. A source said the woman, who works in the entertainment industry, often visits India for business and checks into the same hotel at Juhu.

2. Four Killed in Accident, Mob Sets 18 Trucks on Fire in Maharashtra

A fatal accident between a truck and a state transport bus in Gadchiroli on Wednesday, 16 January, allegedly led to an incident of arson in which 18 trucks that had come to a halt on that route were set ablaze.

Police said four persons, including a teenager, were killed and three critically injured when a truck operating for the Surjagad iron ore mine rammed into a bus, travelling from Etapalli to Aheri, at 9 am.

Later, police added, a mob of 1,500 came from nearby villages and set fire to trucks that had come to a halt on that route due to the accident.

3. CBI Registers FIRs Against Two Shelter Homes in Bihar for Abuse of Minors

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday, 16 January, registered two fresh FIRs in connection with physical and sexual abuse of children in shelter homes in Bihar.

The FIR has been filed against the Director of Samaj Samiti Boys’ Children Home in Bhagalpur and DORD Children Home in Gaya for allegedly physically assaulting the inmates, officials said.

The officials involved in running these shelter homes are under the CBI probe. The Supreme Court in November last year had shifted the probe from the Bihar government to CBI.

4. Maharashtra: Thane BJP Leader Arrested with 170 Weapons

Dhananjay Kulkarni (49), vice-president of the Dombivli unit of the BJP, was arrested on Tuesday, 15 January, and 170 weapons seized from his shop, including 10 choppers, an air gun, 62 pistols, 38 button knives, an axe and other sharp weapons worth Rs 2 lakh, said the Thane crime branch.

State BJP leaders, however, said he no longer holds any post in the party.

Kulkarni had bought the weapons from Crawford market in Mumbai and from dealers in Punjab and Rajasthan, police said.

5. Woman Alleges Gang Rape by Three in SUV near Mall in Delhi’s Anand Vihar

A 24-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three men inside a Toyota Fortuner near a mall in Anand Vihar on Tuesday night, 15 January.

Police said one of the accused men was arrested, and the car was also seized. The other two accused have been detained and their role is being ascertained.

“We have registered a case of gang rape and poisoning. The car in which the rape happened had black tinted windows, which has also been seized,” said Meghna Yadav, DCP, Shahdara.

CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to establish the sequence of events.

6. Indian-Origin Doctor Embroiled in Healthcare Fraud in US Freed on Record 7 Million Bond

An Indian-American doctor, indicted in one of the largest healthcare fraud cases in the US history involving a $464 million conspiracy, was freed on a record-setting $7 million bond.

Rajendra Bothra, 77, who was awarded Padmashri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, was indicted along with five other physicians in the alleged USD 464 million healthcare fraud conspiracy, which the federal government said fuelled the opioid epidemic.

US District Judge Stephen Murphy granted the bond for him despite the government’s concern that the doctor has hidden money that could bankroll an escape to his native India.

7. Male Nurse Arrested for Sexually Assaulting 3 Women Cancer Patients in Guwahati Hospital

A 26-year-old male nurse has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting three women patients at a premier cancer institute in Assam’s Guwahati, police said on Wednesday, 16 January.

Kamal Kanti Sen Choudhury, a resident of Belonia in Tripura, had allegedly assaulted the victims at the B Barooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in Guwahati on the night of 31 December.

“Following complaints from the patients to the hospital superintendent, a case was lodged and efforts were undertaken to nab the culprit. He was arrested in Tripura on Sunday,” said inspector Dharani Barman, in-charge of Paltanbazar police station.

8. Muslim Boy’s Charred Body Found in UP’s Sultanpur, Kin Allege Murder

Charred body of a 16-year-old Muslim boy was found in a farming field near his house in Sultanpur district on Monday, 14 January. His family members lodged an FIR of murder against unidentified people on Monday night but the police suspected it to be a case of self immolation over a failed love affair.

According to reports, the incident took place in Daha Ferozpur village of Sultanpur’s Kudwar area where the body of one Mohammed Anas, a student of Class 10 in a private school, was found barely 500 metres from his house on Monday morning.
