A boy was killed and four other children were injured when a device they were playing with exploded in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.
Police said the victim, 11-year-old Saaliq Iqbal, was part of a group of children from Memender village in Shopian who chanced upon a suspicious-looking gadget.
“We have received information that the explosive blew up while the children were playing with it. One of the children died and four of his friends were injured,” said Shopian superintendent of police Sandeep Choudhary.
According to the police officer, the nature of the explosive was still unclear. “We are still investigating what the device was, and how it came to be in the children’s possession,” he said.

Mumbai police has arrested a person for allegedly assaulting and inappropriately touching a woman police sub-inspector in Colaba. According to the police, accused Vivek Madia, a mechanical engineer, was arrested in the wee hours on Monday, when he was asked to produce his car’s documents. The incident took place near Regal Cinema during an on-going bandobast. The accused, a resident of Vile Parle, got angry after the woman police officer asked him to show his car’s document, police said.
An officer from Colaba police station said: “Madia behaved roughly with the police officer. He started abusing and even pushed the WPSI. The accused was taken to police station and was placed under arrest.”

Two women were found murdered in the lavatories of trains plying on the same railway route in Assam over the last 36 hours. Similarities in modus operandi have led police to suspect that the same person may be responsible for both the killings.
In the first incident, a 21-year-old student of the Assam Agricultural University was found strangled in the toilet of a compartment reserved for differently abled people on the New Tinsukia-Rangiya Express on Tuesday morning. Her body was found by a sweeper at Simaluguri station around 9.15 am, barely 20 minutes after she had boarded the train from Sivasagar.

Over one-a-half-years after the murder of 23-year-old software engineer Antara Das, the police have made a submission in the court stating that charges against IT professional Santoshkumar Akhileshwarprasad Gupta, the only person arrested so far, should be dropped as there was no evidence against him.
An employee of Capgemini, Das was attacked multiple times with a sharp weapon when she was walking through Canbay Square, near her workplace in Talawade, around 8.30 pm on 23 December, 2016. A passerby, Satyendra Sinha from Dapodi, who saw Das lying in a pool of blood, took her to a private hospital. Later, Sinha lodged a murder case at Dehu Road police station. On 28 December, 2016, Gupta was arrested from Bengaluru. He was booked under sections 302 (murder), 120 (b) and 23 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

A 60-year-old man in Ganjam district was pushed to death by his son after arguments between them over payment of Rs 5 for liquor turned violent, police said.
Abhiram Das, a priest in Siddhapur village of Soroda block in Ganjam, on Tuesday night had gone to a liquor vend in the village with his son Babula when they fell short of Rs 5. The father and son then started blaming each other for the shortfall following which Babula allegedly dragged and pushed his father into a nearby well.
When Abhiram did not come to the temple the following day, villagers grew suspicious and informed the police. The police arrested Babula and later recovered his father’s body from the well.

An app-based cab driver and his accomplice have been arrested for his alleged involvement in a series of car thefts across Mumbai. The accused were identified as Rajkumar Pal, an Ola driver, and Mohamed Khadeem Abdul Razaaq Shaikh, who is allegedly the mastermind in the case.
According to police, Shaikh, who is from Uttar Pradesh, used to work as a taxi driver. He would steal vehicles from Mumbai and then drive them down till Uttar Pradesh to sell them, police said. The group involved in the thefts comprised Abdul Sattar, Indresh Yadav, Umesh Yadav and Rohitkumar Mishra alias Mintu, who are still on the run.
According to police, Pal, who joined the group later, was central to the thefts. With Pal’s help, Shaikh would park the cab next to the targe vehicle, after which he would open it with a screw driver and flee with the car.

A 61-year-old man, who runs a fair price shop (FPS), was arrested from northwest Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar area for allegedly selling around 1,000 quintal of food grains to some unidentified shopkeepers. After the Food and Supply Department conducted a raid at the shop, three shopkeepers were booked by Delhi Police, and one was arrested on Tuesday.
Confirming the arrest, DCP (northwest) Aslam Khan said, “We have arrested the accused, Pramod Kumar, after an FIR under several sections of the Essential Commodities Act was registered against him at Adarsh Nagar police station. Further investigations are underway.”

A man was beaten to death at a wedding venue in Assam’s Nalbari district when he demanded that bursting of firecrackers be stopped after he was hit by a splinter, the second lynching incident in the state in a little over a month.
Six persons were arrested in connection with the killing of the 35-year-old labourer, identified as Jatin Das, at Ghorathal village in the district on Tuesday, police said.
The firecrackers were burst by the bride’s family to mark the groom’s arrival to their house and a splinter from it had hit Das, police said.
Das’ demand that the firecrackers should not be burst angered the wedding revellers. They allegedly attacked him and beat him up which led to his death on the spot, the police said.
