1. Dance Instructor Mocks Man for Dance Steps at Religious Event, Shot Dead

A 20-year-old dance instructor was shot dead minutes after he made fun of a man for his dance steps during a religious procession in the heart of the national capital. The suspect, still unidentified, returned with his two friends and shot him from close range in the chest.

An onlooker, who was recording people dancing on the street near a temple in central Delhi, captured the moments after the shot was fired. Many people around Avinash Sangwan hadn’t realised that the dance instructor had been shot. It is only when the dance instructor took off his T-shirt after feeling the blood on his chest that people realised what had happened.

The incident took place at about 11.30 pm on Wednesday, 24 October.

2. Elderly Sisters Found Murdered at Home

Two elderly women were found murdered at their house in outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Thursday evening, 25 October. The woman, Asha and Usha Pathak, were sisters and stayed together. Police suspect a robbery bid behind the murder as the house was found ransacked.

DCP (outer) Seju Kuruvilla said they received a call around 3pm when the household help reached the thirdfloor apartment in A-6 Block of Anandvan Society and found the entrance door open. She found Asha (75) lying in the living room, while Usha (70) was near the kitchen. The bedrooms and the living room were ransacked.

“We have registered a case of murder. Some clues collected from the apartment are being analysed to identify the killers,” said Kuruvilla.

3. Lawyer Booked for Drunken Driving in Meerut

A lawyer was booked for drunken driving and detained overnight at a women police station in Meerut after her vehicle allegedly hit two cars and two motorcycles Wednesday, 24 October.

She was granted bail on a Rs 20,000 bond by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rahul Dubey Thursday afternoon.

She is the same woman who had accompanied Sub-Inspector Sukhpal Panwar to a restaurant on the Delhi-Dehradun highway last Friday, where he was repeatedly slapped by its owner and BJP councillor Manish Chaudhary after a scuffle, leading to the latter’s arrest.

4. Term of Man Convicted of Stealing Rs 530 Reduced

Observing that “the accused might be a victim of circumstances like poverty and bad company”, a Delhi court has reduced the one-year imprisonment to a man to the time he spent in judicial custody in a case of snatching Rs 530 from a Government Railway Police (GRP) Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 2012.

The accused had snatched the money from the policeman while he was travelling in a train.

The accused was hanging by a pole near the railway track, while the victim was standing near the door of the train.

As the train slowed down, the accused pounced on the policeman’s T-shirt pocket, which contained the money and other important documents, tore it off and ran away with the contents.

5. Medical College Intern Shot At, Motive Unclear

A 24-year-old medical intern at the UP University of Medical Sciences in Etawah was allegedly shot at by three unidentified assailants on Wednesday night, 24 October.

While the intern, Vipin Yadav, is reportedly out of danger, a case has been registered against the criminals.

“According to the complaint, Yadav was passing through the Karail locality on his bike with a female friend, also a student of the institute, when the three bike-borne assailants stopped them and opened fire. Two bullets hit Yadav near his stomach. As soon as he fell on the ground the assailants fled from the spot with his bike. The victims then called for help and Yadav was taken to the medical college. He is out of danger,” said Etawah Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashok Kumar Tripathi.

6. Chopan Nagar Panchayat Chairman Shot Dead, One Held

The Nagar panchayat chairman of Chopan area in Sonbhadra was shot dead by four persons on Thursday, 25 October. One of the assailants was caught and thrashed by people present on the spot, who later handed him over to the police. The remaining three escaped on two motorcycles. Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder of the chairman, identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad.

“The incident occurred at around 6 am. Like every other day, Ahmad left his house to play volleyball in Preet Nagar locality. He left his house in his car and as soon as he got out of it near the volleyball court, four assailants came on two bikes and opened fire at him. Two bullets hit Ahmad near his thighs and he fell on the ground. He was rushed to the district hospital by local residents but he was declared brought dead at the hospital,” said Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police (SP) Rathod Kirit Kumar Haribhai.

7. Man Dies After Being Shot at in Valmiki Event

A youth died on Thursday, 25 October after being shot at during a procession celebrating Valmiki Jayanti near Mandir Marg on Wednesday.

The police have detained four people based on the statement of the victim’s family members and a video of the incident.

Around 10pm on Wednesday, Avinash Sangwan was admitted to a hospital with a bullet injury. It was found that he, along with his friends, were dancing at the procession at Valmiki Basti and had got into an argument with a few youths. One of them pulled out a pistol and fired at Sangwan. The video shows him dancing when the bullet hit him on the chest.

8. Sheena Bora Murder Case: Shyamvar Rai to Be Produced Next Week

The special court hearing the Sheena Bora murder case has directed that accused-turned approver Shyamvar Rai be produced before it next week.

The court was hearing an application by Rai, who has been behind bars since August 2015, again seeking that his application for bail be heard and decided upon. While he had filed for bail in March, the CBI is yet to file a reply on his application.

Special Judge J C Jagdale directed the authorities of the Thane jail, where Rai is lodged, to ensure that he is produced before the court next week. Rai, formerly employed as a driver with Sheena murder case accused Indrani and Peter Mukerjea – the mother and stepfather of the deceased – was arrested on 21 August 2015 after he was found with an unlicensed fire weapon.

9. Nursery Kid Assaulted by Cabbie for 2 Months

A school cab driver has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a five-year-old nursery student while ferrying her to and from a school in Karol Bagh.

The child’s parents got to know about it on Tuesday, 23 October after the girl refused to go to school. When her parents insisted on knowing why, the girl revealed her ordeal.

After Karol Bagh police station was informed, Usman Khan (38) was arrested from his house at a JJ colony in Burari within a few hours. “We have charged him with rape and under POCSO based on the statement of the child’s parents. We are probing if he is a repeat offender or was ever involved in any other criminal activity,” said DCP (central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa. Khan has been remanded in judicial custody.
