A group of farmers who attended a meeting in Chennai on Sunday to discuss the proposed Salem-Chennai expressway alleged that the police were threatening them and the district administration was forcing them to give up their land for the eight-lane highway project.
“On Sunday morning, some farmers were supposed to leave their village and come here for the meeting. But last night, the police went to the village and warned the farmers not to go for the meeting. None of the farmers have come because of that,” claimed S Shanmugam, State secretary of the CPI (M) farmers’ wing. Swiss squash player Ambre Allinckx is one of the best in her country in the junior level of the game. The 16-year-old skipped the World Junior Squash Championship being currently held in Chennai, and her coach, Pascal Bruhin, cited safety in India as the reason for the young player missing the games. However, Ambre’s parents have now denied that they were concerned about her safety in the country.
Her father Igor elaborated, “We decided in September 2017 that for this season she would play European U17 but not Worlds because she can (and will) still play it twice as she is 16 only. (age limit is 19) Furthermore I had to plan the family holidays in July as in August I have to work and we will not have family summer holidays together for the coming years.”

After experiencing several road cave-ins in phase I, Chennai Metro Rail has decided to be cautious in phase II of the project that is likely to begin soon. According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they have decided to make some changes in the alignment according to soil conditions.
“But these changes will be only minor ones. We have planned to do it as we had issues of roads caving-in in some areas in phase I because of loose soil and want to avoid them in this phase,” an official said. This will be significant as a major portion of phase II runs underground, unlike the phase I.
