1. Lok Rakshak Dal Entrance Exam Paper Leaked

Protests broke out across Gujarat as many aspirants took to the streets on Sunday, 2 December, alleging utter mismanagement of the entrance exams after an answer key to the questions was leaked on social media an hour before the exam was scheduled to start.

In order avoid any backlash, armed police personnel in every district entered 2,440 exam centres across the state and stood on guard within minutes after the paper was leaked. An FIR has been lodged by the police recruitment board at the Sector-7 Police Station in Gandhinagar.

The government announced that it will bear the to and fro travelling costs of candidates when the exam will be held in a month’s time. Some candidates had travelled from as far as Haryana to appear for the exam. As many as 8.75 lakh candidates were scheduled to appear for the exam.

2. Unplanned C-Sections in Pvt Hospitals 14% Higher

Caesarean births or c-sections in India is at 17 per cent according to the National Family Health Survey 2015-16 and was higher than the WHO-recommended rate. The rate has almost doubled from 2005-06. However, what caught the researcher’s eye was the fact that the probability of unplanned c-section was 14 percent higher in private hospitals.

A working paper titled ‘Too much care? Private health care sector and surgical interventions during childbirth in India’ by IIM-Ahmedabad Professor Ambrish Dongre and doctoral research Mitul Surana brought to light that 9 lakh potentially preventable c-sections in the private section in 2016.

The paper asked the question – when was the decision to have c-section made. The answer revealed that 53.6 percent of all c-sections were planned. The research found that unplanned c-sections were 13.5-14 percent higher at a very conservative estimate.

3. Waste Segregation Mandatory in Ahmedabad From Today

From Monday, 3 December, onwards, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will only collect segregated waste. On Sunday, 40,000 AMC employees – from the municipal commissioner right down to the sanitation worker – visited housing societies,255 parks and gardens, public spaces, shopping enclaves restaurants and 700 AMTS bus stands to spread the message of waste segregation.

According to AMC Commissioner Vijay Nehra, this is the largest campaign organised by the civic body. AMC officials have claimed to have identified 28,000 collection points across the city to pick up segregated waste.

Nehra said that starting from Monday, standing instructions have been issued to no accept unsegregated waste. According to him the response from the citizens so far has been positive.

4. Gujarat HC Cracks Whip on State Government Over Livestock Job Scam

The Gujarat High Court issued a notice to the state government over alleged irregularities in the recruitment process for 400 livestock inspectors. The notice was issued by the single judge bench of justice NV Anjaria seeking a reply from the state government.

The petition was filed by several candidates, who appeared for the position. The Candidates have questioned the failure of the state in verifying fake and illegal degree certificates submitted by several candidates. The candidates have alleged this to be a part of a large-scale fraud and irregularity in the ongoing recruitment process.

Petitioners have alleged that certificates produced by many candidates are of universities situated outside the territorial jurisdiction of Gujarat.

5. Four Sanitation Workers Die While Cleaning Drain in Vadodara

Four sanitation workers died of asphyxiation while cleaning a drain in Vadodara district of Gujarat on Sunday, 2 December, police said. The incident took place on the premises of Global Gourmet company on Maser Roadin Padra tehsil.

Sub-inspector N M Rathod of Vadu police station said that the workers were cleaning a sewer line on the company premises and apparently inhaled toxic fumes and fell unconscious inside. They were declared dead on arrival at a hospital at Jambusar in neighbouring Bharuch district, he added.

The cause of death was believed to be asphyxiation though autopsy was yet to be conducted, he said. The victims were identified as Askiran Solanki, Kamlesh Jadha, Manish Padhiyar and Vinod Jadhav.
