1. Leopard Attacks 65-Year-Old Villager; Another Cub Enters Forest Official’s House

Two separate incidents of man-animal conflict with leopards occurred in Dang district on Saturday. In one, the big cat attacked a man in a village after he was rescued from a well and in the other, a cub entered the house of a forest official.

In the first incident, a four-year-old leopard fell into an algae-covered well in Wawanda village, under Ahwa Taluka of Dang on Friday night. On Saturday morning (31 August), a team of forest officials reached the spot and rescued the leopard. However, after his rescue, the leopard attacked a 65-year-old villager, Govind Jadav, and left him injured.

“The leopard ventured into the village during a hunt and accidentally fell into the well, since it was covered with algae. We rescued the animal on Saturday morning, using a rope to tie its body. After stepping out of the well, it injured a bystander, after which the animal was subdued and left in the sanctuary,” said an official of the Dang Forest Department.

2. Police Constable Slits Throats of Sons After Quarrel With Wife

A police constable allegedly murdered his three minor sons by slitting their throats after a quarrel with his wife in Bhavnagar city on Sunday 1 September. Police said the incident took place in the afternoon when constable Sukhdev Shiyal slit throats of his sons Khushal (9), Uddhav (5) and Manmeet (3).

Superintendent of Police of Bhavnagar district, Jaipalsinh Rathore told The Indian Express that the incident took place at around 4 pm on Sunday. The constable cut the throats of his three sons with a large knife inside his official quarters in Vidyanagar area.

“After committing the crime, he called the police control room. His wife was present at home but the constable had locked her in another room and therefore she could not intervene. Prima facie, the quarrel is the main reason behind the incident,” Rathore said.

Sources said Sukhdev and his wife Jigna often quarrelled with each other and due to the marital discord, the constable killed his sons. Being a Sunday, the family was at home.

4. Don't Need Permission to Fill Narmada Dam, Says Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday, 1 September once again reiterated that Gujarat planned to fill Sardar Sarovar Dam up to its maximum water storage capacity. At an event held to celebrate the success of the government's Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan, a programme aimed at conserving water by desilting canals, check dams and ponds in the state, Rupani said that it was imperative that Gujarat becomes a water surplus region.

Rupani said that the state did not need permission from anyone to refill the reservoir at its maximum capacity. "We have the right to fill it," said Rupani.

Earlier, in mid-August following heavy rains, the water level in the dam at Kevadia had touched 133 metres, just five metres short of its upper limit of 1,38.68 metres. The dam has the capacity to store 4.75 million acre-feet (MAF) water. If the spate of good rains continues, Gujarat hopes to see the water level in the dam touch its full reservoir level for the first time since 2017 when its height was raised.

5. Farmers With 4-Acre Land Can Avail 2nd Power Line

The Gujarat government on Sunday, 1 September, announced that it will give a second agriculture power connection to farmers from the tribal belt with a survey number land of four-acre or more. The state in a release said that the decision was taken to benefit small farmers, particularly in tribal areas of the state where landholdings are not big enough to get a second power connection for agriculture.

"The farmer with the requisite land size needs to approach concerned authorities with the necessary documents to get a second power connection for agriculture," the government said in a release. It said the decision will benefit lakhs of farmers in the Central and South Gujarat region.

"Since the land-holding in tribal districts of the state is small, marginal farmers often can't get the benefit of a second three-phase power connection for agriculture under the existing scheme," said the state.
