QAhmedabad: State Gets 16 New Police Stations; Cloudy Week Ahead

1. State to Get 16 New Police Stations, Eight to Be Upgraded

Sixteen new police stations will be set up in the state and eight others will be upgraded, said Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja on Sunday, 21 July.

According to a statement released by Jadeja, 11 districts in Gujarat will have 16 new police stations of Inspector rank and 8 police stations will be upgraded to Inspector rank. The minister also announced the setting up of 7 new police outposts/ chowkis in seven districts of Gujarat.

The 11 districts that will have new Inspector rank-level police stations include Kutch, Surat (rural), Surat (city), Ahmedabad (rural), Chhota Udaipur, Junagadh, Dahod, Patan, Bhavnagar, Surendranagar and Mahisagar. The eight districts that will have upgraded police stations are Ahmedabad, Vadodara, West Kutch, Anand, Amreli, Kheda (Nadiad), Gandhinagar and Surat (rural).

2. Cloudy Week Ahead in City, Heavy Rains in Saurashtra, South Gujarat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the weather in the city will be cloudy next week, with likelihood of rains only on Saturday, 20 July. The weather department has also warned about heavy rains in parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra till Tuesday morning, while parts of central Gujarat and north Gujarat can receive light to moderate showers almost throughout the week.

The IMD has said that Ahmedabad city witnessed generally cloudy rain, with scattered showers on Sunday and it is most likely to remain cloudy next week. It is only on Saturday that there is a possibility of rain or thunderstorm. The city also received some relief as the maximum temperature dropped from over 41 degree Celsius on Saturday to 37.4 degree Celsius (4.5 degree Celsius higher than normal) on Sunday, 21 July. The maximum temperature is also likely to remain around 37 degree during the week.

3. Woman Arrested for Threat Letter to Gujarat Minister Ishwar Parmar

A 46-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday, 21 July, for sending threat and extortion letters to Gujarat Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ishwar Parmar.

According to Bardoli police, the accused, Pravina Maisuriya, sent two anonymous letters to Parmar, allegedly threatening to “burn and kill” his entire family and also defame him in false cases if he did not pay her Rs 1.5 crore. In the letter, the woman asked the money to be delivered at a temple in Navsari at a said time and date.

“The first letter was received at the minister’s Bardoli office on 28 June. The letter, dropped by an unidentified man at his office, had only a demand of Rs 1.5 crore. However, another letter dropped on July 15 at the doorstep of a local BJP leader, Surendrasinh Rajput, addressed to Ishwar Parmar, carried threats to defame him and kill his family if he did not pay Rs 1.5 crore,” said investigating officer, NS Chauhan.

4. Man Booked for Raping 15-Yr-Old Niece

A 15-year-old girl was raped by her uncle several times while she alone at home. The incident came into light after her parents found out she was pregnant. A complaint was lodged then with the Shaherkotda police station on Saturday, 20 July.

As per police officials, the parents took her to the hospital after the victim complained of stomach pain. The doctors informed the parents that she was seven months pregnant. On questioning, the victim narrated that her maternal uncle who lives near their house, visited when she was alone and raped her. The accused even threatened to kill her if she revealed this to anyone. The accused has been arrested under POSCO act.

5. Banks Levying Charges on RTGS, NEFT, GCCI Demands Refund

Banks, mostly nationalised, have not yet abolished the charges for digital transactions, state's apex body for trade and industry has complained to the national banking regulator who had abolished its share of charges recently. An official of the bank said that it would be unviable for banks to abolish charge as the transaction has a cost component.

The Reserve Bank of India, in its notification dated 11 June, stated that, in order to provide an impetus to digital funds movement through Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) systems the charges levied by the Reserve Bank on its member banks will be waived from 1 July onwards.
