The Central Board of Direct Taxes has issued a statement announcing the extension of the last date to link PAN or Permanent Account Number with the Aadhaar number by three months.

The new deadline is 31 December, according to a notification by the Finance Ministry.

This marks the seventh time the government has extended the deadline for the public to link the two identification numbers.

The last extension was in March this year, when the government had pushed the last date by six months to 30 September.

After the deadline, PAN card will become inoperative.

In the first budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term, the government allowed interchangeability of Aadhaar with PAN under income tax rules. That means assessees can now file their income tax returns by quoting Aadhaar instead of PAN.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech on 5 July had mentioned the mandatory quoting of PAN/Aadhaar for certain prescribed high-value transactions for improving compliance.
