1. Dengue Spreads Three-Fold in Bengal

Dengue has started to spread from the northern fringes of Kolkata to the southern limits, a trend reflected an almost three-fold increase in the number of patients hospitalised over the past few weeks.

Public health experts warned that this was just the beginning of the dengue torment since the virus is at its most endemic phase at the fag-end of the monsoon.

2. Sikkim, Bengal Cops Break Ice; 2 GJM Leaders Arrested

Two Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leaders – one of whom had met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nabanna on August 29 – were arrested on 3 September, a day after a powerful IED blast near Darjeeling engineered the beginnings of a thaw in the frosty relations between West Bengal Police and their Sikkim counterparts, and also prompted fresh UAPA charges against GJM chief Bimal Gurung.

3. Bengal Police Shot GJM Worker: Sikkim Police FIR

A West Bengal Police team led by Kalimpong Superintendent of Police Ajit Kumar Yadav chased a vehicle carrying Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters and shot one of them dead in the Namchi area of Sikkim, according to an FIR filed by Sikkim Police.

4. Sonagachi Sex Workers to Undergo Training, Don Chef's Hat This Durga Puja

Sex workers of Sonagachi, Asia’s largest red-light area, will don the chef’s hat at various food pavilions this Durga Puja as part of a collaboration between the state Fisheries Department and Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), which works for the welfare of sex workers in the state.

As many as 30 sex workers will get work as chefs after being trained by the State Fisheries Development Corporation.

5. One Dead, 30 Hurt in Raiganj Clash

One person was killed and at least 30 were injured when two groups of villagers belonging to different communities and armed with sharp weapons and crude bombs clashed after blood stains were found at some temples at Bahin and Raria villages in Raiganj, North Dinajpur.

The two groups attacked each other at Bamangram and Raria villages within Raiganj police station limits and also torched several motorcycles and bicycles.

6. Woman Jumps off Train to Catch Snatcher

A young woman jumped off a running Budge Budge bound train at Akra station in Sealdah south section to catch a man who had snatched her mobile phone and a gold chain inside the compartment.

She was injured and taken to the hospital.

8. Botched Surgery: Medical Body Finds Docs Guilty

Two doctors have been held prima facie guilty of medical negligence by the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) for an alleged botched up hysterectomy.

The gynaecologist and the general surgeon have been asked to answer to the charges framed by the council. The duo have also been asked to appear before the council in person. The date for the same is yet to be fixed.

9. Super Sunday With Kabaddi

A houseful crowd turned up on Super Sunday to watch table toppers from both zones – home team from Bengal and Gujarat Fortunerunners – in action at Netaji Indoor Stadium and break the decibel record.

Bengal Warriors held on to a small but vital lead of four points against Tamil Thalaivas to maintain their unbeaten run at home.
