A young woman died after she was allegedly stabbed by a man when she tried to prevent him from snatching her grandmother's gold chain at their home at Edathikkad in the district on Monday, 30 July, police said.
Nimisha, a college student who was stabbed in the neck, died while being taken to a nearby hospital. Her paternal uncle, who was also wounded in the attack, has been hospitalised, they said.
Ernakulam Range IG Vijay Sakhare told reporters that 34-year-old Biju Molla from Murshidabad district of West Bengal was arrested for killing Nimisha by stabbing her.
The woman, who was cutting vegetables, resisted Molla's entry into the house, following which he snatched the kitchen knife from her.
When she tried to prevent him from snatching her grandmother's chain, he allegedly stabbed her and tried to flee.
On hearing her screams, her family members rushed to the spot and tried to nab him, but he attacked them, injuring her paternal uncle.
The neighbours who had by then reached the spot, overpowered Molla, thrashed him and handed him over to police.
He alleged that the government has failed to prepare a data bank of migrant workers in Kerala.
"No one is safe and secure in the state under this government's rule," the Congress leader alleged.
