At a press conference in New Delhi, CPI(M) legislator Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami on Tuesday, 17 September, delivered an emotional address over the the government clampdown in Jammu and Kashmir, saying “I am very disturbed today... Would it ever have been possible to see such a horrible time?”
Party Chief Sitaram Yechury, addressing the same press conference, said a writ petition was being filed under Tarigami’s name, challenging the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution.
He added that he didn't have many expectations from this regime but he never would have though that they would be desperate enough to do away with provisions negotiated by J&K leaders with the founders of the Indian union.
Tarigami talked about how the people of Kashmir, “despite all odds,” decided to reject Pakistan and join secular India.
“Today those bonds that were created by hard work of people of Kashmir and the rest of the country have been assaulted,” he said.
In an emotional appeal to the nation he said, “Please listen to us. You have heard only one version, listen to the version people of Kashmir as well. We don’t want to be killed or destroyed.”
The Supreme Court on 5 September, allowed Tarigami to shift from Srinagar to AIIMS in New Delhi on account of his deteriorating health, following a petition filed by party leader Sitaram Yechury.
On Monday, the court said he was free to return home whenever he was deemed fit enough.
