All shops selling meat and eggs on the Grand Trunk Road, which connects Dadri and Ghaziabad will remain shut from 19 July, to mark the Kanwar yatra, the annual pilgrimage of Shiva devotees.
Mohammad Azad, a resident of Nai Abadi area in Dadri, told the Indian Express that roadside stalls selling non-vegetarian food items were removed. Police also conducted checks and visited dhabas and food stalls which sell eggs, he told the daily.
“The dhaba owners were asked to stop selling non-vegetarian food till the time this kanwar yatra is on. Stalls were removed from the road. Non-vegetarian food is part of our staple diet, The Indian Express quoted Azad as saying.
Suniti, Gautam Buddha Nagar SP (Rural) told the daily that the measures were an attempt to avoid any “untoward incident”, while maintaining it was part of “routine measure”.
