A day after BJP MP Satish Gautam demanded to know why a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah was displayed at the Aligarh Muslim University, BJP leader Swami Prasad Maurya said on 2 May that Jinnah’s contribution towards the development of the nation can’t be ignored.
Referring to Jinnah as a "mahapurush" (great man), Maurya said that he had worked for the betterment of India before partition.
Maurya’s comments were met with criticism on social media.
Some questioned the logic behind displaying Jinnah’s photograph in an educational institution.
