Famous Jain Muni Tarun Sagar passed away due to a prolonged illness in Delhi on Saturday, 1 September.
Sagar had reportedly been suffering from jaundice for the past 14 days. He breathed his last at the Radhapuri Jain Temple in Krishna Nagar, around 3 am, News18 reports.
Even though his condition had turned critical, Sagar had stopped taking medicines for the past few days. He opted instead for ‘Santhara’ or ‘Sallekhana’, the Jain ritual of fast unto death.
A Digambar Jain, Sagar was born as Pawan Kumar Jain in Madhya Pradesh’s Dahoh district. He had a massive following in the Jain community and was greatly respected by various politicians including Prime Minister Modi, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.
Sagar was most famous for his lecture-series, “Kadve Pravachan", which was a critique on society’s common practices and views.
From Jain monks across the country, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, condolence messages for Sagar poured in on Saturday, 1 September, morning.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh called him a “source of inspiration, the sea of mercy and the agar of compassion”.
Sagar’s last rites will be performed at Tarunsagaram, Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh later on Saturday, 1 September.
