Days ahead of the monsoon session of the Parliament when the government is likely to push for the passage of a bill against instant triple talaq, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, 14 July, mocked the Congress for being a party which stood only with Muslim men.
“The real face of these parties was revealed by their approach on triple talaq,” he said at a public meeting in Azamgarh, part of his two-day visit to eastern Uttar Pradesh.
“On one side the Centre is making efforts to ease and improve the lives of women and on the other these parties are working to put the lives of women, especially Muslim women, in danger,” he said criticising the Opposition.
“Crores of Muslim women had always demanded that triple talaq should be banned, as it is also banned in Islamic countries,” he said.
“I am not surprised as when Manmohan Singh was the PM, he had said that Muslims have the first right over natural resources,” Modi said.
“But I want to ask the Congress whether it is a party of Muslim men alone," he added.
“Is there any place for the dignity and the rights of Muslim women? They have stalled legislation in the Parliament, and they do not allow the Parliament to run,” Modi said.
"These dynastic parties are toiling to oust Modi. I want to tell them that there are still four or five days left for the Parliament session to begin. Meet the victims of talaq and halala, ask them about their plight, and then put your point of view in the Parliament," he said.
“In the 21st century, these political parties are living in 18th century, he said, continuing his attack.
He said people should be cautious of these parties and their leaders.
“They cannot do any good for the people. For the BJP government, the country is a family and above everything else,” he said.
Countering Modi’s charge on tripe talaq, senior Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid claimed the prime minister “knows nothing” about the issue and should not speak on it.
“Does the PM know what triple talaq is? Does the PM know any of these things. If he can say in public what is triple talaq, we will be very happy to answer him. I think, the PM should not speak on everything particularly on the subjects he does not know about,” Khurshid said.
“There is no Muslim, Hindu, Christian party. There are political parties and they are political parties made up of human beings. It is good if the BJP was to discover what human beings are. They have spent too much time amongst those who are not human beings,” the Congress leader said in a scathing attack on the ruling party .
The Congress on its Twitter handle also accused Modi of “divisive and communal agenda”.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also stood in support of the grand old party and lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing a rally in Indore on Sunday, 15 July, Kejriwal said, “When the world is talking about technology and 5G, our Prime Minister is describing the Congress as a party of Muslims and the BJP as a party of Hindus.”
However, Congress wasn’t the only party that Prime Minister Modi hit out during his rally. Speaking of Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party, Modi said that the parties have only done politics in the name of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Ram Manohar Lohia.
“These parties which could not see eye to eye in the past have joined hands now. Do you know why? They want to stall the development work by the government. Will you allow this?” the prime minister asked.
He said because of the policies of the previous governments, eastern Uttar Pradesh had languished.
Hours before Modi laid the foundation stone for the Purvanchal Expressway, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav sought to take the wind out of his sails by claiming it was his own government's project which was being relaunched.
Yadav claimed that the “relaunched” project settled for lower standards and has cut down on amenities like service lanes and lights.
At the prime minister's rally, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attacked the SP, saying that in the name of ‘samajwad’, the party was practising nepotism and hooliganism.
On Akhilesh Yadav's remarks, he said the erstwhile SP government had floated tenders for the expressway without acquiring land or even taking an environment clearance.
Hitting back at the BJP after Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the previous governments of neglecting the people and not completing developmental projects in time, BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday, 15 July said the saffron party too had contributed to the delaying of projects.
“Why is the prime minister shying away from accepting this?” the former chief minister asked in a statement, hours after Modi blamed the previous governments by non-BJP parties for delays in completion of various schemes and projects.
“The BJP governments too have contributed in various 'atke, latke and bhatke' (stuck up, pending and derailed) projects in Uttar Pradesh and across the country. Why is Prime Minister Narendra Modi shying away from accepting this?” Mayawati asked.
